Who was the best vocalist between Ella, Billy, and Sarah? Why?

Tough question. Mays, Mantle, Snider question. I say it's between Ella and Sarah. Depends on which one I heard last.

Meh.....Ella.

I much prefer pre-soul Aretha to any of them, though.

For scatting and swinging it's Ella Fitzgerald. For pathos and deep feeling it's Billie Holiday. But for the best singer, meaning vocal technique, vocal creativity, vocal range, full round tones, and other vocal material that makes a singer good/great i.e. breath control, resonance etc. the answer is simple ... Sarah Vaughan. Period. The lady had an arsenal. Even the great Ella herself acknowledged that! Sassy is still ahead of her time.

the only problem that i have with billie is that a lot of her songs are sad and very depressing....ella and sassy sang lots of upbeat and happy songs mixed in with ballads

I love all three:

Ella: the scat/warmth

Billie: the heart/soul

Sarah: the astounding technique coupled with great emotion...a rare combo...

Ella, then Sarah. Believe it or not, I don't like Billie. I know I'm "supposed" to, but I don't.

Me too and oftentimes in that order. Depends on what it is I'm feeling at the time.

Billie, she did have a sad life, I remember the story about two women making fun of her, thinking she was low down and they were thinking Billie thought she was too good in her new fur coat. They burned it with their cigarettes so she in the only way she knew, made them pay with a terrible beating out in the alley or street. Maybe I shouldn't feel this way, but when I read that, I felt a pride in her. Good for her I thought.
