I can also confirm that these prices are indeed correct. I picked up the last copy of the Trane Prestige box at my local 2001 here in Stuttgart last week, along with the Rollins Prestige. These are the ZYX boxes from the early '90s.

Are the german ZYX-digipacks compiled, distributed, AND remastered by ZYX? Any sound experience with these reissues?

Thanks!

I just received a confirmation of my order of the Art Pepper and Bill Evans Riverside boxes, plus many 5 Euro OJC LPs and 7 Euro RVGs.

I already have most of the Evans stuff on better remastered CDs and SACDs (no, not the ZYX remastered CDs) but I bought is as a future christmas gift for my father. He will certainly be impressed to be offered such an "expensive" box set of his favourite pianist :)

I can conform what couw writes:

The Fantasy boxes sold by Zweitausendeins are manufactured by ZYX. However they are not remastered by ZYX. They should sound exactly like the US boxes issued in the 80's and later. Not as good as K2 CDs but not as desastrous as some ZYX remasters. I have the Dolphy box and it sounds really good (I am an audiophile an care about this)

Alfred, unfortunately ZYX digipacks are "remastered" with horrendous results as a rule. I suggest avoiding them and getting US (or Japanese) releases instead.
As has been mentioned above, ZYX box sets, on the other hand, are simply repackaged with the same remastering as US versions. I have Art Pepper 'Hollywood Sessions' ZYX box and it sounds excellent.

I would love to buy some of these sets as presents, but nobody of my firends or in my family cares for jazz!

Thanks!

The ZYX remastered CDs, which can also be identified by the OJC20-xxx number (not all are digipacks), are a very mixed bag. Some sound good, but many have horrible sonic flaws, making the remastering engineers look like absolute amateurs.

- Red Garland "Groovy" has almost no treble and lots of reverb (like an old cassette), whereas the US K2 remastered CD sounds very clear and dry.

- On Cannonball Adderley "Nippon soul", they used noise reduction software, but the result is absolutely unlistenable. The live ambience noise on the opening track comes back and forth (like someone experimenting with the position of anFM antenna :))

- Same thing on track 2 of Art Pepper "Smack up". The opening bass notes have been "denoised" and sound like a rubber band.

I also found some ZYX's which sounded very good:

- Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane
- Thelonious Monk - Misterioso
- Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
- Bill Evans - Waltz for Debbie & At the Village Vanguard

But I don't run the risk anymore, it seems to be 50/50 chance to get a good remastering. Unfortunately the US K2 discs are very hard to find in Europe. I ordered them from www.deepdiscountcd.com at $13/disc with very low shipping rates. Search for "remaster" in the title field.

Many thanks to D.D. for the post. I put in a big order. Both Tatums were still available when i ordered, so hopefully they'll send the solo set as well.
I ordered a huge batch of stuff from Zweitausendeins about a year ago, though they weren't nearly this cheap. I got the Coltrane box for about $60 if i remember. Can't go wrong at these prices.
Looking forward to getting these.

But I had also added in one single Mal Waldron disk, whcih they were still going to ship me for 22 Euro shipping, to make a total of 33 Euro for one CD. So I wrote them to cancel the whole thing. Shipping: Just fill your order, you will then see what the shipping cost is when you choose the destination country, before you confirm the order.

Tax: In principle, you should be allowed to pay the price without VAT (16%), as the tax is only due for orders from a EU country. If it is not deducted automatically from your order you should contact them.

Thanks for the info guys. According to the site, the given shipping is only an estimate, and for packages it is some fee + 29 euros. I was worried about the 'fee.' Perhaps next time I should just take the plunge. :)

As they mention somewhere on their site, the do not deduct VAT for shipments outside the EU (unlike, for instance, Amazon). At the prices they were selling the box sets for however, who cares.

As for shipping, it is either 22 Euros or 29 Euros outside the EU, as they clearly state. I ordered the Monk and Evans Riversides and the total was 22 Euros, not too bad for 27 Cd's. David, there is no fee in addition to the shipping cost.

My copies of Tatum Group Masterpieces, Evans Riverside and Rollins Prestige arrived today. It's something of a miracle they made it from Germany to Texas as they came in about the flimsiest box I've ever gotten in the mail. Aside from that, my only complaint to an otherwise quite happy situation is that there is no discographical information at alll in the Evans set. The Tatum set does have that information, though in a near microscopic format. Anyone know how to get a copy of the readable and complete booklets for these two sets?

I have a PROBLEM with Zweitausendeins.
When they announced "restock" of items, I ordered the 16CD Art Pepper Galaxy set.
I received an e-mail today (in German) saying they were shipping the Art TATUM 6CD group set on May 16.
I immediately sent a reply with my order# indicating the error. I asked for a reply in English.
I haven't heard back yet.
Anyone have a similar experience?
I hope they can (will) correct this.
Otherwise I obviously will never order from them again.

kh1958

May 15th, 2003, 06:49 AM
They forgot one CD in my order, it was listed on the receipt but not in the box.

I mailed them on one morning and got a reply in the afternoon, saying they would send the CD immediately. They also proposed to send me two CDs I had ordered that were not available at the time. As I had picked up those CDs in their local store in Munich since then I replied that I did not need them. They replied that they would only ship the CD that ws missing from my order.

This correspondence took place within a few hours. I got the CD four days later (in an enormously oversized box stuffed with paper :)). So I cannot complain at all about the speed of their customer service. The person I was in contact with was Stephan Luening <sluening@zweitausendeins.de>

king ubu
May 15th, 2003, 08:43 AM
I also am/was in conctact with Mr. Luening and he seems to care quite a lot to provide good service to customers.
When I received my first order which was confirmed to contain the Tatum Group & Evans Riverside, the last one was not included, but instead, there was a note saying they regret that that item had been out of stock.
But I had ordered again already (the delivery in 4 weeks was up before I received my package #1) and not included the Evans. I then wrote Mr. Luening and he said no problem, they will include that one, too, as it was their mistake. So I hope now package #2 arrives safe & soon, and will contain everything I ordered this time. And if so, I consider them doing a great service (and considering their prices, they might be as friendly as the cashier in a McDonald's or someplace like that...)

I would recommend writing in English if you don't know German.

Online translation is not accurate and Germans generally understand English very well.

@EKE BB: In my case they only proposed to send restocked items because they had to send me a missing item. I guess they don't do it automatically.

In the order confirmation they state the items that are out of stock and they don't bill them, so that means that the order of these items is canceled.

I think they are all sold out now. I browsed through the latest Merkheft (http://www.zweitausendeins.de/bestell/merkheft.cfm?language=1) from December and did not encounter them.

Zweitausendeins recently stopped offering some box sets (from various labels) which have been in their catalogue for years. Maybe this explains the bargain price.

The box sets regularly show up on Ebay Germany, at a slightly higher price.

RDK

One set that I really wanted from Zweitausendeins was called "RHYTHM & BLUES GOES ROCK'N'ROLL." It was a 15 CD set for something like $10. (!) There were actually two volumes I believe, for a total of 30 discs.

These no longer show up on the website, but I was wondering if any board members over in Germany know if these are available in any other store (or on-line) at that price. I could use two sets of each. Please drop me a PM if you can help me locate these.

thanks!

The german online store with the biggest choice is JPC (http://www.jpc.de). You may search there.

Zweitausendeins is offering bargains, many titles are available only temporarily.
