FGCE against a D root. alternate with an A9 voicing and it's a pretty hip sound....

second inversion triad with a tritone below:
spill entire structure down in minor thirds ..
eg: ( spelling down ) C Ab Eb A ..to A F C Gb to..F# D A Eb etc ..
do this over an open D7th Bass ( Hold CD )
great way to harmonized diminished scales ..

Pharaohrock,
I experimented a bit with your suggestion a came to
a vamp F-A-C-E (Dm9 without root) with the root (D)in the bass, switched to E-G-B-E (Em7) with A in the bass. Try it, it made me think of Coltrane's Favourite things

the above is true ..the example is basically a vamp in Dorian mode ( sorta minor scale with a raised 5th )
its a variation on the dmi 7/G vamp ( over a D bass ) employed often by Trane and others in similar situations ..

Here's a tense voicing very typical of the kind Geri Allen or Herbie Hancock might use:
LH/ F root
RH/ AbDbEbG
Many possibilities with this as a first chord in a progression, but it resolves particularly well to
A root, RH/ GBCE

This is a nice voicing ( or non cadential chordal movement )
the first chord can be though of as either :
Fmi 9 +5 ..(or a first inversion Db 95b over F )
resolving to a A mi 9
this further moves nicely to:
EBDG over a Eb bass
BEGA# over Ab bass

Thanks Phil. I doubt I have half the theoretical background you do but it's nice to learn about these different possibilities and what they're actually called. I'm encouraged to discover more interesting chords and run them past you.

I'm from Columbus man. Spent time in Cincinnati, and like you I went out to the West Coast (San Diego), but didn't stay....
