Genre definitions and principal artists taken from "AMG Guide to Jazz" (www.allmusic.com) but should semantically be fairly clear. Maximum number of categories for poll used; sorry that this necessitated overlap. Poll limited to 30 days to provide a forum snapshot in time. Since multiple choices are allowed, please post with your choices if you posted multiply!
I'm in for Bop, Cool, Hard Bop, and Post Bop.
Thanks for participating! This should be fairly illuminating.

I didn't vote for every style, but I probablyy should have. The truth is, I love 'em all.

Fusion is my favorite by far.

i like it all, too (except i don't care for "smooth"), but i mostly listen to late '50s through early '70s bop, hard bop and avant garde (i know that covers a lot of ground, but i really do enjoy everything from dave brubeck to pharoah sanders.) i listen to fusion somewhat less often, but still fairly regularly. new orleans/ragtime is probably gets played the least in my house.

I'm not quite sure what defines the "classic" classification. My definition of what constituted "real" jazz used to start with bop and ended pre-Bitches Brew, viewing fusion as something separate but worthwhile.

As originally stated, this poll's jazz genres were taken from the AMG Jazz Guide book although I have seen the titles applied generally elsewhere. The AMG guide also appears on line. Here, for example is their definition of the classic jazz genre, it's time frame and principal artists (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=4:21:02|PM&sql=C451). The poll's jazz categories are in chronological order from about 1915 to the present. I hoped it would help if we were all using the same words to talk about the same things. :)

Anyway, i prefer cool, hard-bop, ecm productions, accustic and semi-electronic jazz.

Sorry; I went to the original link, but didn't notice the "classic" listed with the "New Orleans" but now I see it.
My preference still starts with bop, but I'd love to go back to Preservation Hall again. That was one of the highlights of our vacation in Louisianna last year!

In order of preference:
1)Kansas City Jazz (for fun)
2) Cool Jazz (when I want to read, make love or don't want to disturb the neighbors)
3) bebop (when I don't care if I disturb the neighbors)
4) progressive jazz
5) swing
6) western swing
7) bossa nova (when my blood pressure is high)
8) traditional jazz (when I'm feeling didactic)
9) Third Stream (when I'm feeling pseudo-intellectual)
10) avant guard (when I'm feeling psychotic)

I like just about everything but I’ll take a pass on Smooth and 95% of Fusion.
Favorite listening habit? Alternating Pre-War with Free.

At the core, I'd have to say I'm a hard bop guy, but not to exclusion of other styles, be it swing or fusion (even smooth). while I believe its important for personal taste to be grounded in one elemnt or another, music was never meant to be static - life isn't

I listen to all of it, minus smooth jazz (pseudo-jazz), acid jazz and 99% of fusion.
In my view, the turntable is not a legitimate jazz instrument and I want to hear real vocals, not somebody just talking or shouting...
