As you can see from my avatar, I fall quite far to the left on the politcal spectrum. And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Adam, either you're a bit fond of posting drivel yourself, or you're so far to the right that berigan, wiezen and Dan seem to be on the "left" to you. Either way, I'll pass on your poll.

Moose, Adam is from Boston.... I am pretty sure it is against the law up that way to be a conservative!(Vote for anyone you like, as long as the candidate's name is Kennedy)
I am a Republican lefty(lefthanded) Duh! But I would not say very right wing...I don't know why anyone would want to say they were far left, or far right...but there are more votes for far left right now...
Adam, love that Avatar! http://www.fadzter.com/smilies/thumbsup_old.gif

I have a problem with this - as the understanding of left and right might be different in the US than in Europe. Representatives of the Norwegian Conservative Party have been called commies by the US right because they care for environmental issues and social security.

Where do anarcho-situationists fit in this spectrum?

Bubber, you are correct. To my understanding, the political spectrum here in the U.S. is entirely farther to the right than in most of Europe. We're still dominated by our Puritan origins and the "money is everything" attitude of the industrial revolution. In my life time I've seen the country move farther and farther to the right. Who knows? Perhaps we've reached the point where berigan actually is "not very right", but I don't think we've gone that far...

Yeah, I remember Boston in the news when I was growing up in Georgia back in the seventies. They made the racists in our little town feel like integrationists they were so liberal...;)

I often tell people (only half jokingly) that I'm a libertarian with socialist tendencies. ;)

Far left or far right, usually means "I know it all"

I often wonder how anyone can accept, whole-cloth, the philosophy of any organized political party. I tend to access the proposals of various politicians, and decide what I think about any given situation on the basis of my opinion of all of them. More work, but nobody's right, all the time. I think that if a politician is simply reflecting the views of the party to which they owe their loyalty and their statements are coloured by their wish for personal political survival. Avoiding rocking their personal, career boat, many politicians never, publicly, say what they actually think about any given situation. That creates, for me, a lack of trust in any of them.

Left and right, those notions don't make much sense anymore, except when speaking of extremists.
At least in Europe, parties in power tend to make the same economic, social, fiscal, foreign and interior policy, the only difference being some areas where religious traditions are involved (abortion, gay marriage, etc).
When looking at electoral programs, it is very hard to tell if a political party is left or right, except for those in the extreme spectrum and which have little chance of being in the governement.

We reached that point a long time ago friend. I'd say he's wrong 99.9% of the time.:D

I think the true problem is what we've come to espouse with the "right" and "left."
Let's take a peek here for a second at what the labels were intended to mean...
right: smaller government with less governing power, with the majority of that power going to the most local body possible.
left: government involvement wherever possible, majority of the power coming from a central government.
what we have instead is akin to this...
right: fascists who don't want to be taxed, but want to centrally govern any and every moral aspect of the average citizen's life.
left: socialists who believe in freedom of speech as long as it doesn't offend them, believe in equal rights, but REALLY believe in equal rights when they have an opportunity for grandstanding.
So, no matter what, you're screwed. As a member of the libertarian party, I still end up rolling my eyes most of the time at the stupidity that they put forth.
The people who call themselves right leaning haven't thought about self-governance or states rights in decades. The people who call themselves left leaning haven't thought about how to truly help the Americans who can't donate to the Democratic Party since the 60's.
All of that said, this poll is absolutely worthless...

a rather astute (if slightly too cynical)- post. I think there are thoughtful politicians out there, just not many.
