In the October '03 issue of Bass Player magazine there's a Jazz Concepts column called "Henry Grimes: A Master Returns." It talks briefly about his work with many jazz greats in the 50's and 60's, his disappearance from the scene in '67, his surprising finding by a devoted fan, and his equally surprising return to playing. Also includes a brief transcription and analysis.

The article says he hadn't played in 30 years, sold his last bass in the late 60's, and couldn't afford a new one anyway since he was living exclusively on Social Security. Someone then donated one to him when the story all came to light.

Yeah, the article mentions him in that context, actually.

Hi All,
I had the pleasure of seeing Henry Grimes perform with Joseph Jarman the other night in Los Angeles (along with Alex Cline). Henry can play, and his chops seem to be getting better and better each day!
He's moving to NYC from LA in a couple of days, but he mentioned he'd be "back and forth" between the two cities on a regular basis... so hopefully those on both coasts will get a chance to see this great man perform!
He has an hour long CD available on his website, strictly a solo bass recording made a few months back... I'd encourage you all to check it out!
Cheers,
Shane

I heard some of the broadcast from the WKCR-FM, NYC Henry Grimes Festival in May - specifically the performance by the trio of Grimes, Perry Robinson and Tom Price. Sounded pretty good to me.

There are some Henry Grimes appearances coming up this weekend (October 30th) in New York City as profiled at www.jazznewyork.org. Click on the Henry Grimes photo. The story of his re-emergence and how he was found by a social worker with a love for jazz is there, too.
