Hello Everyone...I'm brand new here...and I've been searching the internet high and low for the answer to this question. Perhaps someone out there can help. On the old Cosby Show (the one with Cliff, Clair and the kids) there is an episode called "Birthday Blues"....for Clair Huxtable's 46th birthday. The guest star on the show is Placido Domingo. At the end of the episode Cliff Huxtable feeds Clair strawberry cream cake...to the melody of a charming mellow jazz piece that I cannot identify. I've read that it is "In a Sentimental Mood" with Duke Ellington/John Coltrane...but I've heard that song...and its not the same. Any of you out there who perhaps watch the old Cosby Show reruns on NickatNite who can identify the recording I'm asking about? Many Thanx. Jupiter.:tearhair:

Ah heck...I'm not getting any replies...so no one seems to know. Oh well...if any of you do ever see that episode...#120 I think...and recognize the music at the very end of the show...please post and let me know...or send me a private message. Thank you!

OK Guys and Dolls...I have managed to record a small snippet of the song I'm trying to identify...and put it in .wav format. As it is taken from a video file of the show..you will hear some dialogue and laughter..but you can also hear the melody.

Any of you brave souls out there who might be willing to let me email this sucker to you...please pm me...I promise I run NAV faithfully several times a week..and you'll get no viruses. So is anyone out there willing to take a chance on it? Let me know....Jupiter

This one might be hard, because I don't know any of the lyrics. What I do know is it was on an episode of the Cosby Show when Stevie Wonder guest starred when he hit Denise's car. There was a song at the end that Claire played for Cliff, I think it was called Candy, but I'm not sure. They repeated candy a lot though? I would really like to get it, but I don't know who sings it or the name of the song. Can anyone please help me? Sorry I don't know more lol.

I found this synopsis on the internet:

"Vanessa has to walk home from the library in the freezing cold after Denise fails to show up to give her a ride. Denise and Theo arrive home and announce that they were in a car accident with a limousine on the icy roads. Everyone is confused by the fact that they seem happy, until they reveal that Stevie Wonder was the limo passenger. Word of the incident quickly spreads through the high school, and a girl suddenly begins paying attention to Theo. This prompts him to decide on a music career. Stevie calls and invites the family to the recording studio. Cliff and Clair try to remain calm, but are actually just as excited as the kids. Stevie records a song using the Huxtables' voices, and sings a duet of "I Just Called to Say I Love You" with Clair. Everyone is thrilled by the experience."

That's probably not the song you're referring to, though.

The name of the song is 'Candy', and I'm not sure who sang it in the Cosby Show, but it was written in the 1930s; I have recording, by Johnny Mercer, Nat Cole and the Four Freshmen.

CANDY, I CALL MY SUGAR CANDY
BECAUSE I'M SWEET ON CANDY
AND CANDY'S SWEET ON ME

SHE UNDERSTANDS ME, MY UNDERSTANDING CANDY
MY SWEETIE'S ALWAYS HANDY
WHEN I NEED SOME SYMPATHY

I WISH THAT THERE WERE FOUR OF HER
SO I COULD HAVE MUCH MORE OF HER
SHE HAS TAKEN MY COMPLETE HEART
I'VE GOT A SWEET TOOTH FOR MY SWEETHEART

CANDY, IT'S GONNA BE JUST DANDY
THE DAY I TAKE MY CANDY
AND MAKE HER MINE ALL MINE

CANDY, IT'S GONNA BE JUST DANDY
THE DAY I TAKE MY CANDY
OH HOW THE SUN WILL SHINE
ON THE DAY THAT CANDY'S MINE ALL MINE

Sorry, I do not remember the exact episode but there is this song that I have been hearing for years and it started with the Cosby Show. Cliff goes over to the record player and a soft piano interlude starts to play( Taaaa-tatatata-ta-..Taaaa-tatatata-ta and then a saxaphone (I think) proceeds it. Taa -Ta Taa -Ta Taa -Ta Taaaa,Taaaa-ta Taaa -Ta Taaa -tataaaa (piano plays tatatata). Ta -Ta -Ta -ta -ta tata - Tata-ta tataaa tatataaa tatata TA-ta . then it repeats with the piano .He then dims the light and then goes into the Kitchen. I don't know if he brings back apples to feed to Clair or Cake.Anyway , this song always plays when Im in my favorite restaurant on cd 101.9 and I have been wondering for literally YEARS what the title of the song is, so that I may be able to purchase it.
I hope my little tata's helped. If you know what Im talking about please respond. I'd really love to buy this song and add it to my collection.

she was the original singer i have the original song if anyone is interested drop me aline and ill be happy to send this awesome song!

Born Maybelle Louis Smith May 1, 1924 in Jackson, TN to Frank Smith and Alice Easley, she grew up singing in the local Sanctified Church choir in Jackson.

In 1932, Maybelle won first prize at the Cotton Carnival singing cabaret in Memphis, TN. A woman before her time, she then toured with an all girl band called the Sweethearts of Rhythm. They played dances from Mississippi to Indiana. From 1936 to 1940, she toured with the Christine Chatman Orchestra and in 1944 she recorded with Christine on the Decca Label.

During the 1950's, Maybelle sang with such greats as: The Quincy Jones Orchestra; the Kelly Owens Orchestra; the Danny Mendelsohn Orchestra and she also graced the stages of the Apollo Theatre in NYC and the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, RI.

Maybelle recorded many songs and hit the charts in 1953 when "Gabbin Blues" hit number three in 1953. "Although she had several more chartmakers, Maybelle was never able to achieve the stardom that her talent deserved. At her best, she was so strong that Billie Holiday once refused to follow her opening act. She could be awesomely powerful one moment and break your heart the next." (From the liner notes in the "Essential Women - HOB" recording)

Like so many talented ladies (and gentlemen) before and after her, Maybelle struggled with a heroin habit that later debilitated her. From the late 1960's, she performed sporadically. Maybelle died in 1971 of a diabetic coma.

I know this is vague and very random question, but there is an episode of "The Cosby Show" that ends when Cliff begins to play a record and rythmically puts a napkin on his wife's lap, then on himself, and feeds her an apple. I don't know what the name of this episode is, but I cannot find anything to tell me what song was being played... It is a very mellow, relaxing song that begins with a piano and proceeds into a sax solo. Does anyone have any clue as to what song this might be???

if any one knows what the name of this song is i would be very greatful,
i first heard it off of the cosby show where cliff and a friend are down in the basement looking at his records they put on this song and all i can remeber is the melody and the lyrics " pretty baby" and " to you" is the very end, but any way cliff starts to sing it and then clair comes down the steps to the basement and sings a part of it and then the wife of the friend sings a part and they all dance singing it to each other.
if any one knows or can even remember more of the lyrics that would be great

If it's the episode that I think it is, the song is "Moody's Mood For Love" sung by Eddie Jefferson. Cliff and his friend are "playing" in the basement while the wives do whatever. As usual Cliff brings out the record and hijinks ensues, with them all singing that song as the episode ends. Great episode.
I'm sure there are others that can give a better history of the song, but Eddie Jefferson sang/added lyrics to James Moody's solo from "I'm In the Mood For Love". A bit of a hit.
Hope that helps. Peace.

I'm new into the jazz world, but I remember wanting to listen to it as a kid because of the songs I heard on The Cosby Show. Does anyone know of any list of songs that were played on The Cosby Show? I can find things from The Bill Cosby Show, but I'm looking for The Cosby Show (the one from the 80's/early 90's). I've been looking for these songs for years, any help anyone can give would be awesome. Thanks a lot.

The song you are looking for is titled "Look at this" and it can be found on the album titled "Music From The Cosby Show," subtitled "A House Full of Love." Grover Washington JR. on saxophone, Fender Rhodes on piano. I do not know if this is the original version of this song or perhaps it was redone for the show.

I too have searched the web looking for this piece of music and artist as played on the show. Not sure if the reference by pml is correct as the piece on the show has no sax.

The only other clues I have that haven't been noted is that the episode is show #521 ("Birthday Blues") and is from Season 5 of "The Cosby Show."

Any further detective work here would be appreciated...

Thanks.

Oh i am praying someone can help me

there was this beautiful slow groove jazz piano song playing at the end of the episode called Clair's Place (12/19/1991)

Cliff built a room for clair in the back of the house, claire was so excited calling everyone about her room. At the end, Cliff celebrated with her by bringing champaign into the room and there was this song playing. Its an instrumental, smooth jazz song with a lot of piano.

Can someone tell me what the artist name is?

thank you so much

I had the same reaction as Hot Ptah. The only thing I can add is that a couple of years ago, somebody asked a similar question here. It was about a different episode, though. I have no idea if the same tune could have been used, but that one was the version of "In A Sentimental Mood" from the Ellington / Coltrane album on Impulse. I never watched the show regularly, so that's all I can come up with. FWIW....

its not Ellington or Coltrane because this song is a very modern sounding song, i can tell by the sound of the recording. At first I thought i may have been FourPlay, but i listened to several fourplay cd's and they don't have a cut on there like that

this is so funny i was gonna post the same thing ha ha ha ha, i am glad someone beat me to it. i remember when he was trying to bid on "night in Tunisia" and clare surprised him and won it for him.

he had "in a sentimental mood" for a scene btwn him and clare with them eating an apple or maybe it was her b day with some cake, anyway either scene was adorable. bill cosby did alot for jazz for young folks who had no idea who most jazz folks were. him and clare were always dancing to something.

I know exactly the song you are referring to and that same song was played on the movie soundtrack "Prime" (the exact same version played on the Cosby Show). I was wondering about that song myself. Perhaps it's a different version but just in case, check out the movie soundtrack and it is track #2 entitled:
**In a Sentimental Mood - Duke Ellington/John Coltrane**
Uma Thurman even makes mention of it in the movie when she's asked. If you are not sure, the movie is worth it anyway and you'll hear the exact piece.

The episode was just on and i taped the tune. Its definitely not In A Sentimental Mood. I believe it is a composition between Stu Gardner and Bill Cosby, either Love In Its Proper Place or Look at This. I searched iTunes with no hits. eBay has A House Full of Love which is the first jazz compilation disc of music from the Cosby Show for about $10. I think that might be the best bet. It is a great mellow tune but nothing as deep and moving as In a Sentimental Mood.

Does anyone know the name and composer of the song that was playing at the end of a Cosby Show eppy when Cliff was feeding Clair fruit and she stuffed an apple half in his mouth. The song also played on an eppy of Girlfriends. It was the last episode of the 2004 season when Joan went to William's hotel room in New York to tell him she loved him. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it

You're right, In a Sentimental Mood is played on an episode when Cliff an Claire have a fight and it ends with that song and they are making up. The song that is played on her birthday is actually on a Cosby Show soundtrack. I used to have, but can't remember the name of the song. You should be able to get the soundtrack somewhere. If I remember correctly, there are two soundtracks.

Hope that helps!

I heard a jazz song years ago and didn't pay too much attention to it and then I heard it again on a Cosby Show episode where Heathcliff turns the record player on for claire after a hard day of work and then he grabs her and they start to dance. I think in the episode the record he played was actually something he was also trying to find for years and finally did. It's a slow to mid bluesy kind of Tempo and I'm almost certain it's Coltrane but I could be wrong. It sounds similar to Coltrane's "Psalm" from the "Love Supreme" Album. I've been searching for years but without a title I've been unsuccessful. I would be so greatful if anyboy could help me with this...

I have read all the questions and answers about songs on the Cosby show but did not see this one. In the episode Cliff and Claire are going to go to a restaurant to celebrate Claire's birthday. Hi Deb,
Part of the problem, is that despite the number of members, only a minority will have seen that particular episode of the Cosby show.

What the rest of us need is a description of the number.

Looks like it's a Ray Charles song - see post #8 in this thread. If I'm remembering correctly, Rudy lip-synchs along to the "Baby!!! [etc.]" part.

I don't know if this is the tune Deb is asking about, but I remember the episode clave is describing, and that tune was Ray's version of "The Night Time Is The Right Time".

There have been SO many questions on this board about tunes from Cosby shows... too bad there isn't a website that lists all the official credits.

Hi,

I am desperately looking for a song from the Cosby show for my upcoming wedding. It is from the episode where Claire is on the couch and Cliff comes in from the kitchen singing it to her. I don't remember much but it is a wonderful love song that would be a perfect first dance.

Can someone please help me with this?

Thank you

I am glad someone finally replied to my message. However, it is not "In a Sentimental Mood". That was the song played at the end of the season one episode titled "The Younger Woman". The song I am talking about was played at the end of the season 3 episode "Call Dr. Huxtable" and the season 4 episode " That's Not What I Said". I am desperately looking for this song. In the meantime, thanks for trying!:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Dunno.. don't watch Cosby. ( or much ev either).. but I would use

"Wait 'til You See Her"
not the greatest love song ever written but when sung by Tony Bennett with the Braff / Barnes quartet, on the Bennett Sings Rogers & Hart album
Close to perfection
Haven't met a cold heart yet, that it hasn't melted.

Jim R. is right! There needs to be a web site for all the tunes played on Cosby. There was some outstanding jazz on that show. There is a CD called "Full House" that has some tunes from the show that I found on amazon, but unfortunately you cannot sample any of the songs. Also, hearing the song I liked only once, I can't give any info on it. But thanks for trying. There must be a way to find out. Just not sure what it is yet.

Hi Deb,

I don't know if this will be helpful, but there's some info. on music used in various episodes here: http://www.cosbyshow.de/english2.html. Also, here's a complete list of the episodes, with brief synopses of the plots: http://www.tvland.com/nickatnite/cosby_show/episodes/

There were 201 episodes of The Cosby Show in all, which is going to make it hard(er) to get information about specific episodes. I wish there was a web site for this, too!

Although the Cosby show was shown in the UK, I don't remember it being that popular, but perhaps the other Brits may have a different conception.

We could, I suppose, track down all the Cosby threads on the BB and amalgamate them into a single thread

The Cosby Show has been in syndication in the US for a couple of decades now - it was always very popular here. Right now it's being broadcast on an "old TV" channel, TVLand.

Shucks. Thought maybe we had it ("Night Time Is The Right Time"). I don't like to give up easily on puzzles and trivia, I guess. :) Was it a vocal or an instrumental? Did you see this episode recently on tv, or do you have it on tape? You said "the kids do the judging"... was it supposed to be like a fashion show, or...? Can you tell us anything more about the song?

I think she's referring to the "smooth" competition that Cliff and Claire had - and I have no idea what the song was, though I can just about remember it....

I am still hoping someone comes thru for me on the jazz song Theo played when Cliff and Claire come down the stairs dressed up and the kids do the judging. This is the same episode where Claire breaks her toe...and Cliff's father gives her a "unique" cane. Please, please...doesn't ANYONE know? You all seem to be pretty knowledgeable with jazz.

I recall the episode, but do not have total recall of the moment that you are mentioning. Is the song a vocal number, where little Rudy lip synchs in a flamboyant manner--then that is Ray Charles' "Night Time Is The Right Time." I think that the episode may end with John Coltrane and Duke Ellington's version of "In a Sentimental Mood". If it is a blues vocal sung by a rather loud female vocalist, that is "Candy" by Big Maybelle. Otherwise, I can't remember.
One problem with questions of this type is that when syndicated shows are rebroadcast, at least in the U.S., scenes are often deleted completely, or shortened, so that the stations can fit in more ad time. That is done all the time, and quite without regard to the content which is being cut and its relationship to the show as a whole. So even watching a rerun now may not help--the song in question could be deleted in the version being shown this hour.

I think the only way to be sure of the songs is to watch the DVDs. Then you've got episode titles as well.

Few topics come up as regularly and produce so few useful replies as the music on the Cosby show. It seems that no one can ever remember the music for a particular episode. There should be a book on each episode and the music used in it.

I've asked this question before, but I'll ask again... is it possible that at least some of these Cosby questions are being posted by the same person/persons under different (new) member names? It would seem like a tedious way to pull a prank, but... seems like a possibility. As greg says, it's annoying- maybe some disgruntled member is annoying us intentionally? What are the odds that this many people would be asking the same questions over and over? Just a thought...

We've seen it here in other forms, by the way (like the whole "Thomasina"/Billie Holiday/Take Five thing...). So, I'm suspicious.

I don't think these are "prank" questions at all - the Cosby Show is in constant reruns on cable. (I even watch it from time to time!) My guess is that questions are inevitable, and the AAJ board comes out very high in Google hits if you're looking for answers to questions on music.

FWIW, it might be a good idea to merge several of the previous "answer" threads into one thread, and make it a sticky. There were literally hundreds of episodes, and every single season is being re-run on cable. I'm surprised there aren't more queries.

As for the Thomasina thing, that did appear to be product spamming.

We have tons of threads about people who don't like jazz, don't "get" jazz, complaints about spouses and kids not liking jazz, etc. - I'm not crazy about constant queries on the same thing (there's a board search engine!), but hey - this show has more than likely proved to be a "gateway" to jazz for many, many people. We should be so lucky all the time - and beccita, I wish I knew the answer to your question.

April 7th, 2006, 10:11 AM
I have no problem with people asking about music on the Cosby show. If someone knows how to reach Bill Cosby, he might be flattered and encouraged that so many people are still asking about jazz on the show. An episode guide on the music on the show is needed.

I also have no problem at all with people posting things like, "I am new to jazz and would like to know more about swinging sounds with a strong beat and a blues feeling. I heard an Art Blakey CD and is there more music like that out there?" That is an intelligent question and the veterans on this board can be of great help to someone like that.

What I find hard to take are these "newbie" posts that are extremely vague and spaced out, like the poster is on some type of mind numbing medication and is unable to articulate even the most basic detail about the jazz they seek. I have often wondered if these purported "newbie" posts are pranks, perhaps all played by the same person under different names. That was the point of this thread.

Jim R
April 7th, 2006, 10:30 AM
I think this thread (especially Hot Ptah's posts) is hilarious. Great satire of some of what goes on at this board. I don't think any of the newbies being roasted here (all in good fun) ever stick around anyway, so it's not likely that anybody will be offended.

Oh, and I wasn't "ticked off" regarding that Cosby topic. I was simply raising the theory that we were "being had" by some pranksters. I may have been wrong (or not), but no big deal. I think perhaps the reason I spoke up was that I've seen a lot of pranksterish (?) behaviour on a number of bulletin boards over the years, and when a board is actually supervised and monitored (not always the case), I prefer to have the moderators attempt to rid the board of pests. But I'm not ticked off... honestly. :)

I have just tried Google with the query Jazz Cosby Show

The first hit is a previous AAJ thread on the Cosby show, so that is why we keep getting the questions.

This site (and bulletin board) is a resource for Jazz for people at all levels, from beginners to players and critics.

I don't think that it is either fair or friendly to criticise people for their questions.

Someone hears a song on a TV program and want to know what it is, and so go to the web for an answer: we are the first site up - we get the question

The thread topic was very clear from the heading -- you didn't have to open it. This BB has a reputation of being friendly to those who post and of being able to answer people's questions without criticism - lets keep it that way. We are going to get many more Cosby Show questions, you can be fairly sure of that

I am sorry if you were offended by the comments in this thread. I think that many long time members here, who are also long time jazz lovers, wish that they could do more for the many people who write in about the Cosby show music, and feel frustrated that they cannot do more. Over time the frustration may have turned to a slight degree of irritability among a few well-meaning, usually helpful souls. The members of this site usually rush to help a new jazz lover with helpful suggestions, when they know the information.
If we could hear the music in question, it is quite likely that someone could identify it. Without hearing it, unless one of us had seen the episode recently, it is difficult to think back to the many episodes of the show and the many pieces of music played. I saw all of the shows when they were first on TV, and have seen some of the reruns (noting that some scenes get deleted in the reruns, unforunately). But I cannot remember episodes to the degree of detail that I can recall the music behind a particular scene.
That is why I think that a Cosby show episode guide, with complete listings of the music played, would be a godsend.

I have to correct an above post about the episode where Cliff is down in the basement with Denise's father-in-law playing records from his jazz collection. Denise's father-in-law asks him if he has the record, "Moody's Mood for Love" by King Pleasure (not the James Moody version). Cliff says he "wore it out" So he starts singing it, "There I go, there I go, there I go..."

Another episode with a jazz tune not mentioned so far is the one where Cliff's surprise aniversary gift to Clair is recreating the restaurant in which they went on their first date, the Callaloo Pot, in their dining room. He hires a calypso band. The band is warming up in the living room playing Sonny Rollins' famous tune "St. Thomas."

Also, the episodes in which Cliff's dad, Russell, is playing the trombone, it's really the great trombone player Slide Hampton whose playing.

Jazz and the Cosby Show...it doesn't get any better than that combo.

Hello everyone, I am a new user.

Since we are on the topic of Cosby Show tunes.. anyone aware of what the name of the song is that Clair played and lipsynced for Cliff at the very end of the episode that had Stevie Wonder as guest star? I thought it was "Candy" since that is in the refrain but I can't find it anywhere on the net.

Thanks.

I pray someone can help me. If there are any jazz fans that did watch the Cosby Show. I'm looking for the title of the album and artist that Cliff was bidding on in the episode where he was bidding from home over the phone. His wife actually went to the auction to bid on the same album and won it for him.

I searched Google for " "Cosby Show" auction ".

One link that came up was Wikipedia's page listing all of the episodes of the show. I noticed that one show was titled "The Auction", but this was a different show, dealing with an auction for a painting.

I browsed through the plot descriptions, and found one that said "Cliff tries to win an old record". The episode title was "Bird In The Hand".

I did another Google search for " Cosby "Bird In The Hand" Parker ". I found a TV.com page that said that the record Cliff was bidding on was an original copy of "A Night In Tunisia" by Charlie Parker.

I am looking for "We Belong Together" by Shelton Becton. It was song on Episode 33 of the Cosby Show by Clair and her dad. I am having a difficult time locating it. I would like to sing it at my wedding in 7 weeks.

I think these are some of the lyrics:

We belong together
Just you and me
The world to see
We bleong together
Throughout all time
You'll still be mine
Cause you came into my life
And made it sweet
And so complete
you'll be my love
You'll be my joy
Forever together

Hi Jessica,
Go to the search tool (just right of centre above the message area): click on advanced search and put in your parameters

Just recently, someone gave the address for the Cosby Show resource site - that should give you everything you need

Also -- did you try googling the song name There are a number of (possibly) illegal sites that publish lyrics.

While on that point: Please: no-one list the lyrics on the BB - they are almost certainly copyright

Ok, it was the episode entitled "Grampy and Nu-Nu Visit the Huxtables", during the sixth season. Cliff is downstairs showing off his jazz record collection to Denise's new father-in-law (Moses Gunn), when they discuss the 1952 recording of "Moody's Mood for Love" by King Pleasure. After describing that he has worn his copy out, Cliff then demonstrates that he can sing it from rote memory .... "There I go there I go there I go there I goooo ....."

As he continues, the scene is stolen when the wives come down the stairs. Denise's mother-in-law, played by a stunning Nancy Wilson, breaks in ... "yougivemeasmile and then I'm wrapped up in your magic" ... and they all sing and dance together on the basement "rug".

That all said ............ are there any versions of this song that anyone would label "can't miss", other than the originals (James Moody's instrumental, King Pleasure's vocal)? I've heard Queen Latifah's version, which sounds about like how I would expect Nancy Wilson to sing it, actually ... it's nice, but ..... missing something.

Suggestions? It's one helluva tune. And, certainly made for a classic "The Cosby Show" guest star moment ...

ok i have a question. i have been searching for a song that was on the cosby show for at least a year now. so if anyone could help me i would greatly appreciate it.

ok well there was this one episode of the cosby show where cliff was teaching this group of guys a class bout life and stuff like that. like it was in this room and all the guys were i dont wanna say screw ups but for lack of better words we will jus keep it at that. well he was going around asking people what they want to be and he comes to this one black guy. he says he wants to be a singer. so he stands up and sings a song and all i can remember from that little snippet he sang was..."and all the melodies that i could sing, and this will show you, that my love is true." and then after he finishes singing it...cliff says now theres someone who can stand out in the street and wait for someone to come up to them and give them a job. everyone laughs and then cliff pulls out the baby doll again and all the guys go ohhh man come on not again or somethin like that.

i really loved that song and have been trying to find what it was ever since i heard it. and i have been tryin to find it for at least a year now. so if anyone could tell me what the name of that song is...ill be very grateful.

so anyone know what song i am talking about???

Hey everyone,
ive been looking like crazy for a song featured on the cosby show. it actually appears in 2 seperate episodes.

the first is in episode 34 "clair's toe", where she breaks her toe, and is played during the smooth competition on their anniversary.

the second time is in episode 521 "birthday blues" when clair turns 46 and is played at the end when cliff is feeding clair her strawberry birthday cake.

i have read through all 11 pages of this thread but none of the answers given are the correct song.

it is NOT ray charles' "nighttime is the right time", nor is it duke ellington's "in a sentimental mood", nor is it "candy" by big maybelle, nor is it "dear lord" (artist slips my mind), not is it "Moody's Mood For Love", from 1952 by King Pleasure.

this is an instrumental arrangement (piano, bass, drums) and the piano could actually be an electric piano (its hard to tell as the recording sounds a little like an electric piano, but it could just be a very old recording that is somewhat distorted).

and lastly, i promise im not a spammer or anything like that, i just have no life and i am, therefore, relegated to watching old cosby show re-runs.

P.S. i have looked high and low on the net, but to no avail, and this is my last resort.

At the end of this episode, Denise's friends come over to her house after their plans to attend a "Walking Lemons" concert are failed. They all have a little dance session in the living room. As this goes on, Clair and Cliff are getting ready to go dancing with two of their friends, which arrive shortly after Denise's friends. The song playing in the background is Chaka Kahn's "I Feel For You" and the kids compete with the elders, by letting them take the lead in their own song; a jazzy song that Cliff and Clair's guests dance to. But I do NOT know where to find this song, there are no lyrics as far as I know, but it's wonderfully put together. Especially the use of it in the scene where Clair joins Cliff and dances with him and he drops her on the couch and acts a FOOL. But if any of you are familiar with that episode at all, please help me, I watch it constantly and I want to know the name of the song.

I've read through every post on here and no one has asked about it. I don't remember much of the episode, Cliff had a blues friend come over and Kenny (aka Bud) was over. The guest and Kenny go back and forth through each line of the song. In the series finale, Cliff and Clair dance off of the set to Miles Davis' "If I Were a Bell". It's the Miles/Trane/Garland/Chambers/Jones version from 1956. It's on Miles' "Relaxin' With the Miles Davis Quintet."

BTW, does anyone here have any of those ultra-rare recordings by Roscoe Sinclair's Jazz Caravan? I understand that trombonist Russell "Slide" Huxtable and saxman Spencer Cunningham had a big bruhaha before the recording session and the tension is in evidence on their recording of "Manteca." I also find it amazing that "Slide" still found time to attend and graduate Hillman University, fight the Nazis in WWII, AND raise Cliff!

I (and MANY others, from what I can tell via Google) been hunting down this song for years. That birthday cake scene is one of my all-time favorite TV moments. Thanks to this thread (yes, I read all twelve pages; common sense is a wonderful thing) I learned there's a soundtrack album with some of the score pieces. Long story short, after some fancy Googling I found that it exists as a track on that album, called "Look at This." I can't seem to find any pages that give samples of that album but found a Grover Washington compilation called Gold that includes that tune. Allmusic.com's page for that (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:w9fexqrdldde) has sound samples. (Trying a direct link, see if this (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=50:0jfwx9u0ld6e~T) works). This is DEFINITELY the song, that charming little tune with piano, electric piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Unfortunately, for some reason Cosby does some kind of odd narration over it. I have not yet been able to figure out if the track exists elsewhere on the album without the voice-over, but I've contacted an Ebay seller with that question, and hopefully I'll hear back soon. I hope it does exist; it would be a real shame if this were the only version.

At any rate, hope this can be of at least SOME help to people.

Thank you sooooo much!! I really really appreciate it!! I had almost given up hope! So thank you once again!! Youre right though, the narration is annoying.. I do hope theres a version w/o it. it reall caught my ear when i heard it... sooo SMOOTH..

I posted here something that got taken down because it included a link to copyrighted material (sorry), but long story short I've found all the tracks from that album and in the case of the one from the birthday episode, Cosby does indeed talk through the whole thing. I don't know how to remove the vocal unfortunately.

Only just joined in this forum, hope it is still active.

I am 99.9% positive that at the end of one episode Cliff and Clare dance, in a restaurant if my memory serves me right, to "Shiny Stockings" by Count Basie. I remember it well because the house band was non other than the Basie Band led by Bill himself.

Re- the family singing to the grandparents. A video of this is on You Tube.

Yep, the Basie band plays at the end of "Golden Anniversary," which is also the second (and last) time the Huxtables lip-synch to a famous record, this one being "I Got the Feeling."

I'm new to the site obviously, so please excuse my n00b question. But I can't find the answer on Google so I need the help. In fact, my question was asked earlier in this thread but nobody answered the other poster.

Episode: Bookworm (or is it Book Club?). It's where Cliff and Claire went to a book club meeting while the kids went to Sondra and Elvin's apartment to hang out. Saw it today actually.

Song was at the end of the episode. Cliff was in his slick blue pajamas and put on a record. It wasn't jazz per say, more like a funk riff. The original poster thought they heard a sax but to me it sounded like a voicebox. In fact, it almost sounded like "california" was being said. If anyone knows Dr. Dre's "California Love", I half wondered if this is where he got that sample.

Anyway, other than that there was nothing sung. Just a funky break. But then the kids came into the room and turned it off.

If anyone knows this, they truly are a legend of vinyl and knowledge.

I'm bumping my own thread, though I can't even remember what the song sounded like anymore. Haha!

The song is called "Running back to you" It is by former gospel group "Commissioned", back when Fred Hammond was lead singer

No that's not the song at all. that song doesn't even have the lyrics quoted by the original poster in any way! I came here looking for the same answer looked up "running back to you" by Commissioned and no that is definitely not the right song, at least not the versions I've heard or read. I don't know if this was even a real song or if it was something the guy or the writers made up just for the episode, I hope its real as it's beautiful.

I'd like to offer a little help on one Cosby Show song people are inquiring about.

The song that was performed by the gentleman during one episode was indeed a Commissioned song recorded back when Fred Hammond was a member of the group, but the song title is "Love Isn't Love"....not "Running Back To You" as someone already stated.

It was, however, on the same album. Both are great gospel songs from an incredible gospel album

It's actually just the intro of "Love Isn't Love" that he sings and then the song goes elsewhere, so if you're expecting the entire song to sound like the intro as performed in the Cosby Show...it doesn't. But it is a great song and is well worth the listen.

Welcome to the site, Lydell. It's always good to have new voices added to the forum, even better when their first post provides an answer to a long-standing question.
Cheers.
