Anybody know who the first Black person to host their own TV show was?

It's a little known fact that Dinah Shore was part black but it wasn't her.

God Bless.....TV......TV DINNERS......BET(V)....
...T(ennessee) V(alley Authority)......Tennessee Ernie....
.....Paid TV.......and TOMMY VIG.

I believe it was Nat "King" Cole. His show featured some great music by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, and Cole himself. It was cancelled due to NBC's fear of the Deep South, where affiliates refused to air the show, and frightened advertisers refused to buy air time. In short, racism. If I'm wrong about all of this, please advise.

I think it was Lorenzo Fuller, now in his early eighties, who preceded Nat King Cole, with his show "Musical Miniatures" on television, in 1947 in New York.

Spade Cooley had a tv show in LA in the mid-40's.

I apologize.

Lorenzo Fuller's show began in 1947. Was Spade Cooley's before that?? Fuller's was shown on NBC.

Hal Jackson had a show in 1949. I'm not familiar with Spade Cooley.

It must be either Cooley or Fuller, no?

Nat King Cole always seems to be the one that get's the credit.

I think it is well established that Nat Cole was the first African-American to host a network TV show.

Alberta Hunter (who had her own weekly NBC radio show at the time) performed on camera during the 1939 World's Fair RCA TV "experiment," which may well make her the first African-American to appear on TV.

There was also a series of TV shows that purportedly originated at the Apollo Theatre. As I recall, it was hosted by band leader Willie Bryant.

ACCORDING TO MY SOURCES YOU ARE ALL INCORRECT.

BTW: "SPADE" COOLEY WAS A HONK.

So I guess that Fuller is still our front-runner for first black HOST of a TV show. :D
Nat King Cole is the one who is probably the most well-known.

So, are we agreed that Lorenzo Fuller was the first black to host his own TV show, in 1947 in New York?

The question was hosting their own TV show and although Alberta Hunter appeared on camera before Fuller, she was not the host of her own show.

The Nat King Cole appearance may be the best known, but it clearly wasn't the first appearance of a black person on TV, or the first black person hosting their own TV show.

Lorenzo Fuller was.

(dis)Still(ED) Life,

I am happy that you have decreed Fuller to be the answer but...

...*YOU ARE IN ERR*

God bless Nuts...Hazel......WITCH.....BRASIL......
......GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER (who BTW invented many uses for the peanut but...all of the major peanut butter industries are owned by HONKS)......FRANCIS SCOTT KEYES....
...THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER...DAMNABLE DAN SICKLES (who murdered Phillip Barton Keyes, the son of Frances Scott Keyes, in full view of the White House, and was the first man to be acquitted on the basis of "temporary insanity")......and..
....the 88 KEYS.

Your answer lies within those blessings.

Well, so far, using the clues given I HAVE found a couple of interesting porn sites, but ............:D:rolleyes:

DECREED???? BALONEY!!!
I've been wrong before, many times, so that isn't the issue.
The designation was first black host of their own TV show. Was that an American TV show? TV was available in Britain before it was in North America. Was it a host of a British TV show?

The name, "Vada Hazen" is floating around in the nether regions of my brain. Does that mean anything?

You've never heard of Lorenzo Fuller??????:eek2:

Fuller was an African-American musical prodigy, who was honoured with a tribute to his being the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO HOST HIS OWN TV SHOW, in 1947, "Musical Miniatures'. The tribute was held in Stocton, Kansas, on this past July 24.

He was also the first black man who appeared on TV, starring opposite a white woman.

OK. I am familiar with Lorenzo Fuller also, but knew that Spade Cooley, his nickname notwithstanding, would not figure into the equation, because he wasn't black.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. On the other hand, none of us knows EVERYTHING:D :D :wink2:

Could you clarify the year for Ms Scott's appearance?? The information I have has her appearing on TV in the "late forties", followed by the designation as "first black WOMAN" to host her own TV show. Although she was in films, as herself, in the early forties, she wasn't on television until the late forties. As Fuller had his own TV show in 1947, if Ms Scott's show was after that she was not the first black person, but the first BLACK WOMAN to host her own show. An achievement, to be sure, but the question was who the first African American was to host their own TV show.
So, what year???? "Late forties" is not specific.

Other accounts have her with her own show in the fifties, even though she lost her show, due to McCarthyism in 1951, or 1950, depending on which account you read. How long did her show run? I know that she lost it because she refused to perform in segregated theatres and went on to become an activist for black musicians because of the rampant racial injustice of the times.

So, what year did Ms. Scott host her own TV show??

If I'm wrong about Fuller, then he just ate some cake and drank some champagne, on July 24th of this year, under false pretenses.

He was being honoured as the first African American to host their own TV show.

Clarification??????

Spade Cooley had a tv show in LA in the mid-40's.

I apologize.

Spade Cooley was American Indian, (who may have been part black, that was rumored, but it was said he was Indian, from the Indian Territory in Oklahoma") I believe he died in prison after being convicted of stomping his wife to death. He had a really popular t.v. show on the West Coast, I don't know if it was national or not.

i don't think DEEP is on this thread or website, i think saundra just resurrected this old thread. no? yes?

I always look at "Who's on Line?" to see what subjects are beeing looked at, and saw a "guest" looking at that site, and since I hadn't seen it before, took a look, and noticed the Spade Cooley comment and put in what I knew of him. He was American Indian, and he often talked about it, and when he murdered his wife, more was writen about him, but I don't remember what. I remember him wearing white Hollywood Western fringed, beaded and sequined outfits.

Just stumbled across the thread, and decided to look and see.
