One of my desert island discs, Nirvana by Herbie Mann with the Bill Evans Trio, was released on CD for the first time a few months ago.

"Prayer for Peace" by Amalgam (=Trevor Watts/John Stevens/Jeff Clyne or Barry Guy). Re-released at last!

I'm not sure if this was 2002 or late 2001, but Ornette Coleman "Live at the Golden Circle" Vol's 1 & 2.

It's been a banner year for reissues; some of my favorites so far include Brubeck & Desmond: 1975-The Duets; Gerry Mulligan & the Concert Jazz Band; Stand Getz: The Complete Savoy Recordings; Lester Young: The Complete Savoy Recordings; and Sarah Vaughan: The Complete Roulette Sarah Vaughan Studio Sessions by the premiere reissue label, Mosaic. The Charlie Christian boxed set would have made it for the music, but the boneheaded package design cuts it back a notch.

The Ornette Coleman Golden Circle CD's both volumes, RVG editions, constitute the re-issue event of the year. The best boxed set is Mosaic's "Complete Roost Recordings" by Sonny Stitt. Honorable mention: Ellington's "And His Mother Called Him Bill", with bonus tracks.

Coltrane's "A Love Supreme Deluxe Edition" is an excellent reissue package. Sound is terrific, as is the detailed, scholarly booklet. The 1965 live performance is enough to make the package worthwhile, although the sextet takes of "Acknowledgement" with the Quartet plus Art Davis and Archie Shepp, are merely interesting curios. But the original "A Love Supreme" is of course a masterpiece. If by some chance you don't have it on CD, the deluxe edition is a must.

Water Babies man. It's one of the most classic Miles records with the hippest dark melancholy mood, and nobody knows about it 'cept me!!
lol.

Peter Brotzmann - For Adolphe Sax
Willem Breuker Kollektief - In Holland

I think Anthony Braxton's "Quartet (Dortmund) 1976" was reissued this year (not last). If so, that definitely goes in the list.

I'll add the Ornette 'Golden Circle' albums, but only because the sound quality was so improved, as the older versions were readily available so it wasn't a major event, as it was with the above.

Omar: The Ornette "Golden Circle" reissues contained much new music. The new versions of "Antiques", "European Echoes", and "Doughnuts" were so extraordinarily brilliant that they rendered these reissues a major event, in my opinion. We may disagree on that, but I'm an Ornette fanatic and any new music by him is cause for celebration.
