Just been listening to this new 4 part 30 min programme -
Dame Cleo Laine and daughter Jacqui Dankworth discussing and
playing recordings of female jazz vocalists. After Sarah Vaughan,
Jacqui Dankworth chooses Betty Carter -following the record Cleo
explains why she is not impressed by Betty Carter and tells us -
that if her daughter sang like Betty Carter she would disown her!

I share Cleo's feelings about Carter, who, IMO, was only palatable in her early Vaughan-like days.

thought you might agree Chris - Cleo said she preferred singers
who sang in tune and hit the centre of a note occassionaly :)

Ooooh ouch. I am not a Betty Carter fan, but have to agree with Cleo. I prefer singers who hit the note more than just occasionally.

I would consider Betty Carter to have more spirit, adventure, style and talent than Cleo Laine, content to run the scales like Bobby Mcferrin in a frock.
