Hello!!
I'm looking for musicians who play Samba, choro, jazz... to talk about it, and maybe play together in the next year.

I feel bad cause i dont know much about the genre even though i was born in Brazil. I really love it, but dont know enough to know what to listen to.
Any recommendations for samba/choro would be nice :)?

Well, I was born in Windsor... That is quite a ong way from Rio :D
That is an excellent list! THank you Luis! I'm a big fan fan of Samba and a bit less keen on Choro I must admit.
BTW, had a little discussion on the meaning of "Batucada" a couple of months ago whichwas "lost" in the hacker attack. I thought Batucada meant any Drum music: Samba, Maracatu, capeoira (maybe...).. But apparently this is not the case.
OK, so what is Batucada?

OK, so what is Batucada? Hello JPW!
I'll try tell something about "Batucada", although I have a "small" english.
Your sight about batucada is correct, but in Brasil there's another meanings...
Batucada is every meeting where the people(professional musicians or not) play samba(and variations like, pagode, partido alto, samba de breque...);and other "regional" styles like coco, maracatu(that have many variations too- maracatu cearense, maracatu de Recife...), baião, xote....
In batucadas you can have harmonic or melodic instruments, but the percussion is the principal. Many times, people improvise(build) crazy instruments using objects like spoons, dishes, botlles...(I have a video showing somethings about it), but the real batucada( in my opinion) must be traditional instruments: tamborim, pandeiro, surdo, agogo, etc.
It's possible that in other places of Brasil, the people use another expressions to say "batucada", but in the southeast- Rio de Janeiro, São paulo, E. Santo, Minas Gerais; and northeast(Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco...., this term is very popular.
Keep writing, I hope I was "clear"
PS: The real batucada needs many beatifull womans and beer too!!!

Luis,
You have been clear as a bell :D
I'm inviting myself over for Samba, beer and erm... :D
There is obviously more to samba than Samba do Enredo (which I have a few of) and Samba Rock / rap (Nacao Zumbi / Monobloco etc).
I prefer a big, hard, complex sound - for instance like West African percussion (Ewe, Ashanti, Yoruba etc)
Do you have any suggestions for samba albums or boxed sets I should be on the look out for?
I am prepared to ship from Brazil if I have to.
Obrigado!

If you know the roots of samba, you can feel that stuff, so... you must listen to the Rio de Janeiro's samba(new and old), cause I think it's more sophisticated(swing, melodic and harmonic) than other brasilians styles of samba (maybe for the mix whit portuguese elements).
You must look for Noel Rosa, Moreira da Silva, Dorival Caymmi(Bahia), Almirante; (there is no good quality of recordings, but have the samba spirit).
and listen too, names like "Zeca Pagodinho", produced by "Rildo Hora" and you will find good recordings and arrangments.
I have many albuns, maybe I can make a little "compilation" to you.
