I am writing a fictional novel about a young sax prodigy and I would like to know the difference between alto and tenor sax. Any difference as to what kind of sax I have him play? Is one preferred over the other or is it all a matter of taste? One last thing, what are some of the essentials that go into being a great sax player like Bird or Coltrane? The ability to read music? Ability to play some notes vs others? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Jeff

Why not ask a great saxplayer who does it for a living. go to http://gregvail.com. He has a cool page that explains about saxes and a ton of other stuff.
