I would go with the Fodera Monarch first and the Tobias Growler (pre-Gibson) second. Either with a neck-thru design. I also like the sound of humbucker style pickups (fatboys) w/ a custom pre-amp section. If slap style is in your repitoire, make sure you get wide string spacing at the nut. Ibanez does make some high end basses. I.E. The Gary Willis model. Bassist, Gerald Veasley also plays custom made Ibanez basses not sold comercially. If you can afford a Fodera, F-basses and Roscoes are also nice and are in the same price range. Also check out the Modulus brand of basses.
I personally like SWR amps. GK's are also a good bet. I own both SWR and Fender in addition to Peavey. But depending on your needs (from small clubs:150-200watts or 2000+seat auditoriums: 350, 700, 1000 watts) you'll have to try them all out because they all have their own sounds and colorings. My Fender BXR200 pushes only 200 watts into a 15" woofer and is very loud for a combo amp. 200 watts may not seem like a lot but it is very efficient for small to medium venues unless you are playing with guitarists with Marshall Stacks with their volumes up to 11!!:D

Zon basses are good aswell, expensive though but very sweet and could be worth to look into if you have the cash. http://www.zonguitars.com/zon.catalog.html
I have heard alot good about Modulus as well, Alex Webster have one which sounds great. I even planned on buying one but the cash situation was low at that time.

"The Best" is really about the best for you -- the way you're built, the way you play, in the situations you play in. So, my broad recommendation is, play a lot of basses and buy the gear that lights you up.
It is no slam on this site -- a wonderful general-jazz resource -- to note that there is a topnotch site dedicated to bass exclusively. Try www.TalkBass.com and see what people have to say.
Good luck!
