Featured Wynton Marsalis last night on the radio program, which was shortened to two hours because we’re fundraising. In the first hour I played all of the recent sideman appearances with Branford (J Mood), Marc O’Conner (Honeysuckle Rose, Tiger Rag), Ted Nash,The Marsalis Family Band (Cain and Abel), then some music by the Either Orchestra inspired by Billy Harper and some Billy Harper.
Every thing’s sweet, listeners are liking this. Going into the second hour we started with Blue Mitchell and Wynton Kelly playing a ballad, Clifford Brown with Strings, then the Marsalis Septet's version of “Black Codes (From the Underground)” from the Village Vanguard Box. By now I’m working alone, the phones are quiet as it’s getting later, and it affords time to really listen.
I’m thinking, given recent discussions regarding Wynton's influences, about playing some Bird after Black Codes when midway through the soprano solo an old timer calls up and says, “How do you expect to raise any money playing this? These guys sound like they’re tuning their instruments, they don’t know how to play! “ I’m holding the phone thinking to myself, Irony, a great big deep ocean of irony, I’m a buoy in the sea of irony. So we talk a bit, seems he likes jazz “where you call tell what song they’re playing” and then requests some Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra.
This isn’t an isolated incident. There are 80 year olds who’ve called me up to say they hired Louis Armstrong to play at their college party at Northwestern in the late 1930’s and recall, during the 1950's, seeing Monk playing alone in San Francisco, nobody listening to him as he quietly played solo off in some club on the embarcadaro, so why bother with bop? Listeners who have called to say Paul Whiteman purged jazz of it’s machismo so why are you playing Coleman Hawkins? Not isolated, but not the rule, either.
But what do to? I can’t go from Wynton to the Casa Loma band. So I played some Don Redman with Benny Morton (I got Rhythm), Fletcher with Hawk, and Jimmie Lunceford’s "Blue Blazes." The Casa Loma band is not without merit: bred out of the Jean Goldkette organization in Detroit in the 1920’s, they’re ensemble arrangements helped, along with Redman and Henderson, to organize the big band’s antiphonal interaction between the sections. The first thing I played for the guy was called “White Jazz,” right?, then Casa Loma doing Benny Carter number and arrangement (Apollo Jumps) recorded in the 1950’s and a version of “Smoke Rings.” Said good night with Sidney Bechet’s “Blue Horizon.”
Conservative? You have no idea.
