I saw Thelonious Monk at the Village Vanguard Thanksgiving weekend of '68.

The Monk movie Straight No Chaser was filmed that year, so I found it to be particularly interesting.

The Chet Baker movie Let's Get Lost is a must-see.

Both of these movies include plenty of performances as well as offstage discussion.

I live in Chicago, there is a tumpeter, Orbert Davis. He did a live concert with the double quartet, a jazz quartet with string quartet. Very nice, I have seen the other movies as well. My suggestion is go to your local library. In Chicago the library has over 200 videos with jazz, classical, blues etc....

I also find that the documentaries are a great way to see and hear performances. last note, the chicago blues museum has concert footage, dont know how they got this stuff but it covers miles to modern jazz quartet. sorry for the long reply

The Sound of Jazz is a classic live TV broadcast with Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk and many more greats. It may be getting tougher to find...

Both Bill Evans Trio VHS tapes made in 1979 (available from Rhapsody and Vestapol) are essential.

Joe Pass In Concert : Brecon Jazz Festival 1991

Ken Peplowski Quintet: Live at Ambassador Auditorium

Chick Corea & Friends Remembering Bud Powell Live DVD

Clark Terry: Live in Concert DVD

Toots Thielemans: In New Orleans DVD

Well, all mentioned above are GREAT! There's also a nice series out on video (and probably on DVD) called Jazz Casuals. It was a 30 minute Jazz show once a week, they play about 20 minutes and then the artist might answer a few questions from the host. Carmen McCrae, Count Basie, Dizzy, Coltrane....the shows are amazing.

Jazz Scene USA has some nice tapes out too....these are videos of ( I think) live performances. Phineas Newborn's show is great.

My favorite video is LA ALL STARS, featuring a bunch of people....like Hampton Hawes, George Duvivier, Sweets Edison...etc. It's kind of short, but definitely burning.

If you're in the Chicago area, you can find all of these at the Jazz Record Mart.

I read somewhere on the net that "The sound of Jazz" with Billie Holiday and Lester Young are going to be released on DVD later this year. :)

I wonder if Chet Baker - "Let's get lost" is released on DVD somewhere in the world. I would really like to have that one.

I saw Chet live here in Helsingborg at Jazzklubben in the 80's.
He was kind enough to sign an LP for me. Nice to have as an memory of him.

Jazz Scene USA is definitely a program worth watching.

I have a DVD of it that features the Cannonball Adderly Sextet and the Teddy Edwards Sextet.

I was completely blown away by their performances.

Check out this new jazz guitarist out of Richmond, VA. His name is Rick McLemore and the CD is "Just Let Me Play" it is available online at CDbaby. I am telling everybody because it is off the hook. He reminds me of a young George Benson if you like that style of Jazz.
