View Full Version : Guilty listening pleasures

Okay, now that people are getting to know each other a little better, let's have out with some of your guilty listening pleasures.....you know, the kind of stuff you secretly relish listening to but has no critical pedigree whatsoever or is publicly unacceptable for all of us jazz snobs to admit liking....In keeping with the spirit of the thread, let's not flame people when they're only being honest (it does say "guilty" right?)
I'll go first:
Assorted 80s schlock: Huey Lewis, Bryan Adams, Duran Duran, Billy Ocean (yes, Billy Ocean y'all- some of his shit is pretty catchy. lol. "Get out of my way......and into my car!!" )
West-Coast rap I was conditioned on as a teenager, e.g. Dre, Snoop, Warren G, RBX. In private I may from time to time rap along...lol.
TV Themes- i'm a big fan of Mike Post, and the Magnum PI theme is my favorite of all time....there is a version from Kazaa I downloaded that has an extended improv section!!! I also like: Miami Vice, 21 Jump Street, and for really corny ones- Benson, Full House, and the theme from Perfect Strangers....BALKI RULES!!!
Okay, I've just officially forfeited any claim to being some cool, stoic character at this site. Now you can plainly see there is a silly dimension to Pharaoh you were perhaps not aware of!! lol.

pharoah, it's get out of my *DREAMS*...not way. :)
i defy anyone to listen to a hall and oates (probably the single most made-fun-of group in history) song and any new song on pop radio and tell me with a straight face that you think the new song is anywhere near as good as hall and oates using ANY criteria. i wish pop music was as good now as it was in the early '80s.
don't make me go into my "bon jovi is way cooler than nirvana" spiel.

Culture Club...Church of the Poison Mind is a jam and a half.
Weezer...I love Weezer. Allows me to rock out like the geek I secretly am.
Wang Chung...been trying to get the group to do "To Live And Die in L.A." forever. "In the dark of the night, everytime I turn the light, I feel that God is not in Heaven..." that's some deep shit right there.
Enough east coast hip-hop to make Courvoissier disappear for miles around, and, ummm, Nelly. And tons of house music.

No reason to feel guilt about hip hop from either coast.
Mine:
ABBA. Now THAT'S a guilty pleasure
Kim Fields' "Kids in America"
The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack
Pharaohrock

maybe not guilt, but white kids from the suburbs getting down with that old West coast stuff is such a cliche and i'm a part of it.

OHMIGOSH Paul, that's like one of my favorite soundtracks of all time....Wang Chung did everything on there including the instrumental tracks....I like "Wake Up Stop Dreaming" and "Lullaby."

Yeah, actually, To Live and Die in L.A. is the album that turned me onto Wang Chung. Then I turned around and got hip to the fun that is Everybody Have Fun Tonight and Dance Hall Days. And I almost forgot before, three that truly are guilty pleasures...Herb Alpert, Hugh Masekela and Chuck Mangione.
Pharaohrock
February 3rd, 2003, 04:59 PM
I like Hugh Masekela's pop-jazz records...he's got a really sunny spirit.

I'm a millencolin fan, pop punk at its best...
I also like Wesley Willis whos lyrics make Anal Cunt look smart. Since he does his music on a amateur keyboards preprogrammed music it also add to the fact that the music itself is somewhat crappy.

thanks man. i know so many of us here can relate to exactly where you're coming from with that...not like those strange metal web sites where jazz heads hang out and talk about Coltrane this, Coltrane that....

Well, I'm a big fan of good old timey Western Swing and country music. Patsy Cline is my favorite. I also love that song "rock candy mountain," great hill billy music.

how could you listen to those british fruits! actually, i have my own guilty pleasures: i've gotta get a message to you by the bee gees, expressway to your heart, i forget the groups name, kind of a drag by the buckinghams, the rain, the park and other things by, yes, the cowsills, hey you don't forget that kiddie stuff you hear when you're 10 years old. i think coypu liked junior death metal as a child! "the naughty pee-pees"-

Bombastic, Expressway to Your Heart was by The Soul Survivors!
For my guilty pleasures, two words - BUDDY GRECO!
I know this doesn't count musicwise, but when I was a kid, I saw every episode of My Mother the Car. And now maestro, if you please...
Everybody knows in the second life
we all come back sooner or later
as anything from a pussy cat
to a man-eating alligator.
Well you all may think my story
is more fiction than it's fact.
But believe it or not my mother dear
decided to come back
as a car.
She's my very own
guiding star.
She's a 1928 Porter.
That's my mother dear.
She helps me through
everything I do,
and I'm so glad she's here.
My mother the car.
My mother the car.

I gotta get me some of this. First, Buddy Greco was at one time a seriously good bop pianist before he turned to singing and big bucks, and I am not making this up. Second, Wesley Willis is da bomb, sidesplittingly funny, Coypu, there's hope for you yet. Now, it's confessional time. Comic, novelty tunes are my Achilles heel. Such as, "My Boomerang Won't Come Back", by Charlie Drake. "Fish Heads", by Barnes & Barnes. "The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati", by Rose & The Arrangement. The very great "Surfin' Bird", by the Trashmen. Anything by Spike Jones. Almost anything by Tom Lehrer. I could go on, but you get the idea. I also love "Blue Moon" by the Marcels, "Gee" by the Crows, and most things by Fats Domino, but the Fat Man doesn't count as a guilty pleasure; he's actually really good. I did not make any of this up.

You got a problem with Duran Duran, MAN? Simon LeBon RUUULES.
- on a serious note, Arcadia was actually a quasi-artistic offshoot of Duran Duran.

I have everything Sylvian has done, and seen him every tour. So it's not a passing phase! And yes the Fripp stuff is good. Look out for Damage, which is them live. A good angular take on Sylvian, which is needed sometimes.

I have a Jimmy Durante album I love; also the first Tiny Tim record. The soundtrack to "A man & a woman" is another sentimental favorite. And then there's "Where do you go to my lovely" by Peter Sarstatdt. Gets me everytime, though I can only listen to it about once every three years ...

Cool, AC mention Culture Club in one of their songs. Check it out if you like : do not click if you are sensitive to strong lyrics (http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/analcunt/defendersofthehate.html#2)

They actually made a whole album with ballads that had serious lyrics and music. The albums name is Picnic of Love, it is pretty good actually.

yeah, Seth sings in somekind of falsetto which sounds horrible but it has a very strong commical effects. With lyrics like "I respect your feelings as a woman" in oposite to their usuall "I became a counselor for the sole purpose of telling rape victims they asked for it".
Anyways here is a song : picnic of love (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/MX/Essentials/Anal%20Cunt%20-%20Picnic%20Of%20Love%20-%2001%20-%20Picnic%20Of%20Love.mp3) , it shows jazz players how smooth music is supposed to be played.

It's All About The Pentiums, The Saga Begins, and especially Oops I Farted Again, all by Weird Al Yancovic. Also the theme from Mystery Science Theater 3000, the greatest tv show of all time.

depeche mode
oh yeah... love that 80s synth sound
red hot chili peppers - blood sugar sex magic
gin blossoms
and then there's a bunch of east coast hip hop that i like (but i'm not all that ashamed of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Digable Planets, the Roots, Pharcyde, Jedi Mind Tricks, etc.)

Thought I'd revive this thread because I'm ripped on painkillers and in a really odd mood. So look out: The Fugs "Boobs A Lot" and "I Feel Like Home Made S**t" (I am not making this up.) Also Spinal Tap "Big Bottom". Is death metal a guilty pleasure if you basically don't listen to it? Or is it a guilty pleasure BECAUSE you basically don't listen to it? (Just kiddin').
jazzypaul
February 22nd, 2003, 09:26 AM
Oh, man, the Fugs. They're a hoot. Clifton, did you ever hear the fake commercial that they did on one of their albums for Fugs Bleach? "If nothing else will get it clean, FUG IT!" Once in a while I get my chops busted by my boss for throwing that one in at work whilst getting my daily duties done.

Guilty Pleasures - one man's rock/music god is another man's no-talent-bum . . .
My No. 1 guilty pleasure is first and foremost and somewhat vindicated by his induction into the R n' R Hall of Fame(and therefore out of cult status) - Gene Pitney!!! One of the most interesting and unique voices in Rock/Pop history!
Others - the Classics IV, the underappreciated Zombies, various Girl Groups (sorry, I'm a sucker), Art Tatum, Gram Parsons and the
Flying Burritos Brothers (1st album), and Billy Stewart! Also Bratmobile, Margo Guryan, the Guess Who, Django, Sadina, Barbara Lewis, the McGarrigle sisters, the Cookies, Odetta and many others!

I admit to really liking 'Chocolate Starfish ..' by Limp Bizkit. So, the lyrics are petulant, whiny etc. But it still rocks loud.
I also tend to listen to anything, or rather watch on TV, where there's some sexy, dusky love goddess(es) doing their thing. So, I'm prepared to sit through the Brits till Beyonce comes on to shake her booty and put up with So Solid Crew because of the lovely Lisa Maffia.
