1955
Where were you in 1955? Were you Class of 1955 at your high school? At your college? Did your future husband take you to see Duke Ellington during your engagement? Did you see Miles at Newport when you were a senior in high school?
Here's a general query for anyone alive and listening to music in 1955: For a book I'm writing about the music of that year, I'm interested in hearing from anyone with vivid, specific memories of attending a live concert during that year. I'm interested in all forms of popular music: pop singers, rhythm & blues, country & western, jazz, swing, blues, rockabilly, gospel--whatever you were listening to. I'd love to hear anything you remember about the show--who was on the bill, how the music sounded, how the performers looked, whether you danced, what the venue was like, etc., etc. The more specific the better. I'm interested in good stories, and in what the music meant to you: did you sneak out to see your first blues show that year? Stay up all night to watch an unforgettable jam session?
The only condition is that you must have some reason for specifically remembering that the show was in 1955. Perhaps you had a sweetheart that year, and the two of you saw the show together. Perhaps you saw Ella Fitzgerald singing on TV, This, or caught Cannonbal Adderley at the Bohemia that summer. Whatever your memories, I'd love to have them--and if I use them, I'll be glad to give you a big thank-you in my book.
And, of course, if any of you out there are musicians who played with well-known performers of any kind from that year--in concert, in recordings, or elsewhere--I'd especially love to hear your stories.
So please feel free to email me at calvertmorgan@worldnet.att.net with any memories you have. And tell your friends! I'll be grateful to hear from you.
Many thanks--
