hello suzi8kat,
Do you want to be informed about essential jazz cd's, contemporary jazz, a specific jazz idiom (swing, bebop, freejazz,...)... ?
Which artists do you like?

hey lazybird
thanks for getting back to me so soon.
i'm really kinda open on wot ever there is out there.
but listening to the late lounge i really enjoy smooth jazz.
i also heard an album about 1996(ish) a double album on vinyll called jazz fusions ( not sure when it was released though). i would really love to get another copy of that or at least find out wot was on it so i can go out and buy music from those artists. I would also love to hear more dinner jazz. i guess thats a start huh. like i said i'm open to suggestions as to wot is good out there.
once again thanks

In my opinion smooth jazz is not real jazz, but more pop music. If you want to dig real jazz, check out some things of the list at the bottom. those cd's are good to start with.
Miles Davis / kind of blue
John Coltrane / Blue train
Horace Silver / Song for my father
Herbie Hancock / Maiden voyage
Grant Green / Idle moments
Art Blakey / Moanin'

Suzi8cat is a newbie who likes smooth jazz. You won't put suzi on jazz by recommending 'heavy' fusion.

Actually, if you're listening to smooth jazz, the easiest crossover into the real stuff is the stuff that's really light on its feet...
Ahmad Jamal: But not for Me
Stan Getz: Jazz Samba
Getz/Gilberto
Samba '64
Cafe Au-Go-Go
Ramsey Lewis: The In Crowd
Herbie Mann: Live at the Village Gate
Vince Guaraldi: Greatest Hits
and a little Mose Allison never hurt anyone...

you mentioned dinner music. maybe you'd enjoy these:
charles mingus: "trio" (with hampton hawes on piano and danny richmond on drums)
john coltrane: "coltrane plays the blues"
or my new favorite:
chico hamilton: "the original ellington suite (featuring eric dolphy)" this one has guitar, giving it something in common (at least as far as instrumentation goes) with a lot of smooth jazz, so maybe you'd dig it.

To continue with the 'light' feel,
Shelley Manne and his Men at The Blackhawk (any volume, but the one with 'Summertime' especially

hey all
thanks for all the replies , i only posted a few hours ago and i got a list as long as my arm already.
my starting point i think will be jazz fusion, but not heavy fusion.
the same kinda stuff i heard on that vinyl some ways back.
btw if anyone knows that album or the tracks on it i would be real gratefull. i dont remember much except i think the first track was something to do with rain falling down and kenny G was on it somewhere. wish i could remember more the brain aint wot it used to be........L
i did buy the smooth jazz from jazzFM , but i have to say i wasnt impressed with it at all. there were a couple good tracks on it. i did expect more from the jazzFM team though. guess thats why i'm here asking for help.
maybe there are some good mp3 samples to get an idea of where i wanna go, and before you all shout yuk to mp3, i agree with you. the media sux big time. i used to be an audiophile with vinyll as my front end playing on a michelle gyrodeck and through class a homebuilt monoblock amps drifting sweetly through electostatic speakers. I do want to aviod spending huge amounts on cd's that i wouldnt really listen to, so again any advice is welcome.
thanks to all of you for you words of wisdom

lazybird,
That was a good CD ( i have em all) and made at the time when smooth jazz was not even a word.
Its not edgy nor bland....its contemporaryjazz. A compilation CD originally started by Chet Selwood.
suzi,
I wanted to post lists earlier but hesitated since I really would like your own list (if you have one) so I can make the "closest" recommendation based on your taste.

hey everyone........
just wanna thank u all for your help. i guess if i can track down this one album then i'll have my starting point.
thanks joel, yeah it was good. I had it on vinyl and would love to know if its still available. You say you have all the fusion albums, can i ask just how many there are ?
was there a track called songbird on this album, (now i'm really stretching the memory)
if this is the album i listened to all those years ago. is it still available ?
there was a guy singing in one track and he had the most wonderful gravelly ,lived in kinda old sound to his voice.
i checked that review link lazybird, it didnt help much as thier was no album art and no track listings. i also seem to remember there being more than 14 tracks, it was a double vinyll.
as soon as i get a shortlist i'll be heading for the record store this weekend. guess its about time i got used to cd's huh.....at least for music............lmao
again i'm indebted to you all.
