Hi everybody!
I from Brazil and i love my contry specially becouse of the rythms that we have here. There's a very visible difference between Brazilian instrumentist and the ones from other places: rythm. It's something very magical. If someone can't understand my vision point, just try to find any music performed by the drumer "Nenêm". It's not a "rectangular" Jazz, we have here a natural but very complex way to execute a beat. I'd like to read some opinions about this.
Bye!

Odon, you're preaching to the choir...I don't think anyone here would dare talk smack about the greatness of brazillian rhythms.

Add: Marco Pereira, Simone, Trio da Paz (Romero Lubambo,
Nilson Matta, Duduka da Fonseca), Helio Alves, Elis Regina,
Nara Leo, Luciana Souza, and the emerging Two for Brazil
(Paulinho Garcia on guitar/vocals, Greg Fishman on sax/flute).
Much like the original Getz/Gilberto pairing but more rhythmic variety and Brazilian standards. You might like their newest CD,
"Take Five."

It sure is. Being in Chicago, JP, you would know about these guys, and that they won the best entertainer 2002 award over Von Freeman and Kurl Elling. But they're not really national yet.
INTERnational, yes - big tours of the Far East and a long gig in Thailand recently- but not yet as big as they should be in the US.
To answer the other question, Take Five is on Jazzmin Records,
and it's available at twoforbrazil.com (At least. Maybe other places, haven't checked.)

Nice to see Luciana Souza getting some props. Her recent disc was nominated for a grammy but she lost to Diana Krall. Surprise. Surprise. Surprise.
In fact, Luciana has a gig on Monday night at Joe's Pub in NYC and I may find myself in attendance.
Another real good Brazilian ex-pat in NYC is singer Maucha Adnet. She was in Jobim's band for years and has one disc out on the Japanese Venus label.

I think Luciana is wonderful, but it was kind of strange to have an all-Brazilian CD nominated for best jazz album. Probably confused the voters there.

Maucha's terrific too. She shows up on Trio da Paz dates, but there's never enough of her!

Say! I used to have an album, purchased back in 1960 called Bud Shank & Laurendo Almeida Play Jazz. Has any one heard of it, and does anyone know how I might get a copy of it, I have looked at Tower Records and other places on the internet with no luck. This had a great Brazillian sound to it, or at least I thought so. I also had an album by Cal Tjader called Cal Tjader plays Bongo's does anyone recall that one? I would love to replace these records that my brother gave to his girl friend while I was away at the Olympics in 1960. The Brazillian beat really started influncing jazz in the late 1950,s and the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach played a lot of Brazillian type jazz at that time.
