As the genealogist for my family, I have hundreds of hours of interviews of family members (some now passed on) on cassette, and would like to transfer them onto a permanent media. I transferred some to CDR a couple of years ago, but some of the discs went bad. The expense of putting them onto aluminum cd is prohibitive. Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You will probably get a number of recommendations, but I would go for MiniDisc, although I would use a Hi-Fi deck and not a portable to do the recording. Minidscs (or at least some) are guaranteed for one million recordings.
Even so I would record each one twice, and get another member of the family to store the second copy for you

Would a mini-disc last for decades? I'd like something I felt my great-grandchildren would be able to listen to years from now. It would also be nice to have pictures, and possibly videos, on the same disc to be easily accessed by a computer or some futuristic device.

For videos, pics and audio. I would go for DVD-R.
yep, create your own movie, put cross fading family pics or sceneries on top of audio interviews....etc....there's lots you can do.
dont go cheap, this is your heritage.
here's a nice machine to use :wink2:
