I was never a big fan of the studio records like Decoy, Amandla, Tutu et al. but if you check out any live material from his bands, either on cd (Live around the World) or on video, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The band, with a cast of characters ranging from Kenny Garrett to Foley to Bob Berg, gets into some MAJOR jams. The ballads like Time after Time seem "smooth", but the more uptempo shit is pretty damn funky at times. Miles acquits himself well as far as still being able to develop interesting (and mysterious) solos.
And for guitar fans out there, Scofield's solos are totally incendiary. I haven't been more floored by a solo than his solo on the opening cut of the Live in Montreal DVD, and that's saying something because I've had a bias against Scofield for a while...
But don't believe the hype- Miles was still creative at this point in his career and there is some real substance (and infectious vibe!) in the music his bands played at least live, if not so much on the records.
peace and all that.
