Bev - you beat me to it! Caught it last night and it was really excellent - I'd love to know where I can get hold of the RDNZL track with Jean Luc-Ponty (the version I have on Studio Tan doesn't have him playing). Fascinating to hear Don Preston's comments about the other musos (abilities) in the Mothers. I shall definitely try to catch the next two parts. Well done The Beeb for this!

I don't know alot of Zappa - the 'comedy' aspect never really interested me in the 70s and I tended to ignore it all as a result. But a year or so back I was recommended Hot Rats/Waka Jawaka/The Grand Wazoo here and on another board which I've really enjoyed.
The programme last night piqued my curiosity further.

one of my absolute favorite artists. I really feel that his family has dropped the ball in regards to his legacy. They released a double disc of a live show last year with promises to release more, but nothing has happened for a year now. I wish they could take a look at how Robert Fripp handles his own archives, and try something similar. People want to hear Zappa, yet they keep refusing. I guess the kissing up to the Democratic party is taking too much of Gail's time.

they're also busy trying to put "project/object" (the traveling zappa tribute band) out of business.

There is a big spread on Frank in the double issue (Dec/Jan) of Jazzwise, I will save it to read on Christmas Day;)

Perhaps you could introduce a family tradition of standing round the Xmas Tree and singing some of the more dubious Zappa songs? That'd wake Auntie Betsy from her post-Xmas brandy snooze!

How's about a rousing version of 'Let's Make the Water Turn Black'?

You probably all know this but Mojo magazine (Jan 2004) has a 12 page feature on Zappa (partially written by Charles Shaar Murray)

anything in the article we may not already know? such as, why Gail and the ZFT are withholding many unreleased concerts promised to us years ago?
