While i was at the Jazz à Mulhouse festival in France in August, i had the opportunity to buy a very nice dvd/cd box with and about Peter Kowald.

It's called "Off the Road", and is released at RogueArt (2007).

There are 2 DVDs and one cd in the box. The first DVD is a road movie about a US tour that Peter Kowald made in 2000. There you can see him playing with many different musicians, from NY then south to Louisiana, Texas, California and then back to Chicago and NY. The footage is excellent, there are also parts where Peter is talking about his music, the people he meets, etc.

The second DVD is called "Chicago Improvisations". It shows Peter playing with different musicians from Chicago: Fred Anderson, Hamid Drake, and there is some really great footage of him and Ken Vandermark when they were recording in studio. On this DVD too, you can hear the musicians talk about their music and experiences, it is really great stuff. There is other material that i let you discover!

The cd is tracks extracted from the US tour.

Now i can only say that i am sorry that i've never had the chance to see Peter Kowald playing while he was alive.

It was a great idea to release such a DVD/CD box for us who still have much things to discover and learn about these great improvisers. :)
