View Full Version : Your dream session band

Pharaohrock

If you could call anyone together for a session, who would they be??....Forget about whether the band might end up sounding less than the sum of its parts, just tell us your first instincts on who you'd want to call.........can be living or dead....if it's "dreaming" you can dream they're alive again I suppose.

Man, you are cruel!!!! Hilarious, but cruel. When Jim wanted to play up a storm he could. Ask Sonny Rollins. Same goes for Lester. There are a couple of up tempo things he did with Basie's band which were killin'. Like he had to prove that he could play. And after all, he did cut Coleman Hawkins...

The Band Of Brothers - Thad Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Keg Johnson, Budd Johnson, Branford Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Hank Jones, Percy Heath, Elvin Jones. Feel free to add Jason Marsalis or Tootie Heath as you see fit. To the Masters Of Getting The Most Out Of One Note, you should definitely add Ben Webster and maybe Paul Bley. This thread is fun.

Wes Anderson doesn't swing?? Whatever- your basis for judging something is obviously "well, once when i heard about 10 seconds of that one album...." Wes Anderson definitely DOES swing. Play his live at the Vanguard record and ask your pops if he swings, since you may not yet have the ability to gauge for yourself.

As a matter of fact, the last record I listened to of Mr. No Swinging Warm Daddy was the Vanguard Record. I was in disbelief at the high school level of musicianship that was allowed to be released on that album. This young man sounds pretty good when he's reading music, but that's about it. If this is your taste in alto sax players, you can have him. Personally, he couldn't make my gig.

jazzypaul: A Chicago All-Stars without Vonski? I am truly, deeply offended. Unless that was the personnel for your band. And PRock, an All-Brit band without Stan Tracey or John Surman? The Gods Of Brit Jazz have taken note of this, I assure you. How about the Mingus Sideman All Stars: Lonnie Hillyer, Eddie Preston, Jack Walrath, Ted Curson, trumpets; Jimmy Knepper, Britt Woodman, Willie Dennis, trombones; Eric Dolphy, Charles McPherson, George Adams, Booker Ervin, Hammiett Bluett, saxes; Jaki Byard, piano; Mingus, bass; Virgil Day, drums. Just kidding, of course the drummer is Dannie Richmond. However, Day was the very solid drummer who took over when Richmond left Mingus in the early 1970's to tour with Mark-Almond, a pretty good rock-jazz band in their day.

Ooh, that would be nice. I know they only recorded one or two things with Mingus, but I'd throw in Booker Little and Rahsaan as ringers (not that you need ringers in that band).

Here is my list for what would be the most technical jazz band of all time :

Allan Holdsworth
Ron Jarzombek
Sean Malone
Morgan Ågren

Holdsworth = the best guitarplayer of all time, has highly unique compositions that more than often end up being very hard to play.

Ron Jarzombek - Spastic Ink is probably the most technical music that exist outside classical music. Ron is also a master guitarplayer.

Sean Malone - Have a shitload of compositional skills, he is also one of the fastest and most skilled and overall solid bassplayers out there. He is also one of the best stickplayers out there.

Morgan Ågren - One of the best out there, most drumsolos render me to sleep but Morgans solos are a joy to watch. This guy have extreme chops and knows how to use them.

Nothing could match this lineup.

dw, i know you're a fusion fan. my comments were directed towards nobody in particular, but everybody in general.

the way i look at it is that since this forum is part of the aaj website, then anything appearing on that site is fair game on this discussion board. that includes fusion.

ridding this discussion of fusion would be like telling people on a cooking discussion that they aren't allowed to talk about seafood.

Christian McBride (acoustic and fretless electric bass)

Ray Brown

Now wouldn't that be just beautiful?

Boris Kozlov (acoustic bass)

I think this would make a band with great sidemen.

rahn burton (rahsaan's painist)
cleve eaton (count basie's yodeling bassist)
Leo Parker (bari sax)
Charli persip (drums)
Julian priester (trombone)

and I think musicians who have nearly gone insane would be good group too, the cool part about these guys is that they all write music.

Sun Ra (on piano)
Charles Mingus (bass)
Rahsaan Kirk (woodwinds)
Steve Ellington (drums)
Eric Dolphy (woodwinds)

and i would like to see what would happen if u took revolutionaries of their instrument and stuck them together like:

jimmie blanton (bass)
john coltrane (ts &ss)
papa jo jones (drums)
j. p. johnson (piano)
jimmy smith (b3)
j. j. johnson (tbone)
clifford brown (tpt)

Well, if I was playing in the group, I'd have to select the following cats to play with...

Saxophone - Hank Mobley
Trumpet - Clifford Brown
Piano - Herbie Hancock
Bass - Jimmy Garrison
Drums - Art Blakey

And if I wasn't playing, I'd throw Wes Montgomery in as the guitarist.

I know there are many definitions of what JAZZ is , Can someone tell me what fusion is ?.I certainly respect the ability of the musicians playing , and I like some fusion but on the whole it just doesnt sound as good as traditional jazz .I respectfully ask your opinions thx charlie

Branford Marsalis (ts)
Elliot Mason (tb, bass tpt)
Brad Mehldau (keys)
Dave Holland (bs)
Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums)

IMO, fusion is one of three things:

1. You love it from the instant you hear it.
2. You'll hate it forever and probably call it a pox on the face of jazz today.
3. It'll grow on you like a wonderful fungus.

Personally, for me, it was #1.

Some great fusion is the band UZEB -- a now-disbanded Montreal fusion band with no guitars. Also, you'll want to check out "Screaming Headless Torsos." Sounds a bit weird, ne? It's actually some very nice fusion with a mind-blowingly talented guitar player. Jaco Pastorius's eponymous debut CD is full of carribean fusion, and his later albums are a bit more focused if you want more specifics. He also played in the quissential fusion band, "Weather Report." They had a lot of incarnations, but I love the live album 8:30 and the studio album Heavy Weather. Great CDs. There's a lot more info at www.allmusic.com -- go to browse by genre, then jazz, then fusion. Plenty of great stuff there.

My vote goes to the Count Basie album "More hits of the '50's and '60's recorded 1963. They personified the meaning of ensemble playing. The solos are strong and the bass is equally strong. Drums are not my favorite but for this band, quite good. Here they are:

Trumpets: Snooky Young, Al Aarons, George Cohn, Don Rader, Rickie Fortunatus
Trombones: Henry Coker, Grover Mitchell, Benny Powell, Urbie Green
Saxes: Marshall Royal, Eric Dixon, Charles Fowlkes, Frank Wess, Frank Foster
Bass: Buddy Catlett
Guitar: Do I have to say it? Freddie Green
Drums: Sonny Payne
Piano: The man, Count

Notice the extremely slow rendition of "The Second Time Around". Almost to a complete stop, but swings just the same. The same for "In the Wee small Hours of the Morning" and "This Love of Mine".

It looks like most of the personnel are from the Basie Band with a few NY session pros thrown in.

Let me know what all of you think. It is my personal favorite.

First of all, happy new year! Here's 2 bands for you (one is too hard)...

Trumpet - Woody Shaw
Sax - Joe Henderson
Piano - McCoy Tyner
Bass - Ron Carter (without an amp)
Drums - Jack DeJohnette

Band 2

Trumpet - Freddie Hubbard
Sax - Branford Marsalis
Piano - Herbie Hancock

That band is almost exactly what I'd pick.

Except I'd probably have Elvin Jones on drums, and maybe have Richard Davis on bass. But that one's flawless too. :p

My idea for this would have been who would you want to put together for your dream session not just some session.

In that respect my "all star" band has pretty much done things already but perhaps not as the solid unit. But if it were a 6 degrees of seperation game it would be easy as hell But I'll split it up a bit

Modern Straight ahead Postbop goodness with

Playing all of their own tunes

Guitar: John Scofield
Tenor Sax: Wayne Shorter
Trumpet/Flugel Horn: Tom Harrel
Piano: Herbie Hancock
Bass: Dave Holland
Drums: Jack Dejonnette (sp)

I think This would be a real interesting band

Tenor Sax: Joe Lovano
Guitar: Jim Hall
Bass: Charlie Hadden
Drums: Bob Moses

Avant Guard Trio

Bass Clarinent and Saxophones: Eric Dolphy
Piano: Chic Corea
Drums: Elvin Jones

Organ Trio sent by the Heavens

John Scofield
Joey Defrancesco
Bill Stewart... c'mon that would be insanely burnin'

I'm a big fan of duos. I would love to see these guys do duo albums

Herbie Hancock and Gary Peacock
Gary Burton and Jim Hall
John Scofield and Jim Hall
John Abercrombie and Keith Jarrett
Joey Defrancesco and Bill Stewart.

I think those would be interesting as heck!

Now If I had the chance to pick anyone to play with I would go with..

Me on Guitar
Kenny Wheeler on horn
Brad Meldhau on piano
Dave Holland on Bass
Bill Stewart on kit. I could die right after the session and not be upset.

My twist is a little different. This group is called The M Squad. The reason will be obvious in a second.

Sax
Frank Morgan (A)
Branford Marsalis (A)
James Moody (T).
Hank Mobley (T).
Jerry Muillgen (B).

Trumpet
James Morrison. To show off his versatility, on his 1991 album Snappy Doo (which also includes a rhythm section), Morrison overdubbed himself on four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and piano. He is a great technical trumpet player.
Lee Morgan. He gets a lot of the solos
Wynton Marsalis. So does he, if he’s good enough.
Blue Mitchel. Nice player

Trombone
Andy Martin. If he’s good enough for Gordon Goodwin, he’s good enough for me.
Rob McConnel. Nothin’ wrong with a few valves. They’re very common on trumpets.
Ian McDougall. Lead trombone for Boss Brass for 20 years.
Delfeayo Marsalis. Don’t know much about him.

Drums
Shelly Manne. Great west coast drummer.

Bass
Charles Mingus. I would also humbly ask him to arrange and compose.

Piano
Marian McPartland. Why not Monk, or Mengelberg, or Mehldau, or Moran or…..? My first pick was Monk, but he really is too individualistic for a big band like this. McPartland is a very competent main stream player who will fit right in.

Guitar
Wes Montgomery. No contest.

Singer
Carmen McCray. I would have preferred Ella McFitzgerald, but that wasn’t her name.

Piano - John Taylor, Keith Tippett
Guitars - Robert Fripp, Phil Robson, Simone Guiducci
Tenor + clarinet - Tony Coe
Alto + Clarinet - Gianluigi Trovesi
Alto - Jason Yarde, Pete King, Ingrid Laubrock (+ soprano)
Tenor - Mark Lockhart, Iain Ballamy, Evan Parker (+soprano)
Baritone - John Surman (+ bass clarinet)
Bass clarinet - Louis Sclavis, David Murray (+ tenor)
Trumpets - Pino Minafra, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Douglas
Trombone - Nick Evans, Paul Rutherford
Cimbalon - Miklos Luckas
Uillean Pipes - Liam O'Flynn
Kora - Toumani Diabate
+ someone to handle the Mexican harps
Vocals - the Varttina girls, Ulrika Boden, Julie Fowlis (for the Gaelic numbers!), Norma Winstone

It would also need a legal expert to deal with the visa complications!

Jimmy James, I love your combination of Rosenwinkel/Mehldau/Shorter/Patittucci/Ballard. That would be a great group.

I just got Rosenwinkel's "Deep Song" (first time I've ever heard him) last night and I love what I hear. This is deep, beautiful music...no wonder he's been the talk of the town amongst guitarists on here.

Anyway, I'm gonna post another setup:

Experimental Jazz Trio:
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Jaco Pastorius
Tony Williams

Duo record, would be awesome:
Brad Mehldau
John Pattitucci

More straight ahead:
Mulgrew Miller
Dave Young
Lewis Nash

Swinging chops duo:
Joe Pass
Oscar Peterson

Also, if I could play with any guitar player right now, I'd love to jam with Anthony Wilson. I love his playing and tone...he sounds sooo good.

EDIT: Also found a post on another forum in a similar topic with a few quintets:

Playing Ellington, Mingus, Trane, and Monk, with that kind of amazing aggressive energy heard on "Money Jungle"...

Eric Dolphy
John Coltrane
Duke Ellington
Charles Mingus
Max Roach

Can't even begin to compare any group in this format to --

George Coleman
Freddie Hubbard
Herbie Hancock
Ron Carter
Tony Williams

In a more modern train of thought, playing more free/avante-garde with tunes contributed by all members of the band...

I think it might have been '69; perhaps even '68.

I suspect men are still castrated, though not for the purposes of creating countertenors :) One does wonder whether some of the middle eastern potentates still have seraglios and, therefore, whether they're exclusively staffed by women

Clifford Brown Trpt
Dexter Gordon Tnr
Bird Alto
Ray Brown Bass
Max Roach Drums
Oscar Peterson Piano

This pretty much sums it up. Except, I might throw Bud Powell or Bobby Timmons on piano. The rest can definitely stay.

I think I'd add Sarah Vaughan to the mix also.

My ideal big band wouldn't necessarily rely on all high powered soloists -just totally competant professionals-who also could play excellent jazz.

However, it WOULD meet the following criteria:

1. Be thouroughly rehearsed, and well compensated for their talents
2. Be enthusiastic about the music ( the back end of #1 would aid in ensuring this quality )
3. Have played together in a road situation for several months on a nightly basis.
4. Have mastered all the nuances the
composer /arranger intended.
5. for his part, the composer /arranger would have had the chance to edit out all the bullshit parts of the arrangements thus making them even more fun to play.

that would be my ideal band!

p.s: however, it would have Mel Lewis playing drums!

Band one:

Art Tatum, assuming he had knowledge of jazz after his death.

Band two:

Philly Joe Jones: Drums
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen: Bass
Keith Jarrett: Piano
Joe Pass: Guitar
Cannonball Adderley: Alto Sax

I'm just imagining their sound. Yikes.

You are aware that Desmond didn't play tenor right?

Whoops. Well, anyways, guess my dream band has no tenor.
