hi everybody!
i've got to work out a presentation for school about the last developments in jazz music/ jazz in the late 90s/00s... what is characteristic for jazz in this period of time, what artists are important etc.?

The characteristic is that nothing is characteristic. There isn't A jazz scene, but a whole bunch around the world, and no-one can follow them all. If I were you, I would either talk about this diversity and then focus on the area that interests you, or discuss a handful of wildly different types of jazz and try to show how they all relate to what jazz is.

One development that I can think of that has occurred since '97, if that's your starting point, is the increasing popularity of female jazz singers.

Another trend is that impulses for further developement might as well come from other parts of the world than the US - a search for articles by Stuart Nicholson might give you some info on this.
