Well I ain't new, but I do have a question

Is there a UK publication which gives prices for second hand albums, especially Vinyl.

The reason I ask is that I spotted John Dankworth's "What the Dickens" at £30 "Too expensive" was the advice from the board. I have since seen it at £45 and £60 in different shops.

I need a refernce guide so that I don't get conned (too much)

The Penguin Guide for Record & CD Collectors (6th ed.) advises between £20 and £40 depending on condition.

cheers, tonym

Do you ever go hunting on eBay?

I have purchased what I considered hard to find albums there for what I believe to be a good price, and when one seller heard from me, that I had been to the Lighthouse back in it's hayday, and knew some of the people he had known, he sent me a video of them filmed at a t.v. studio back in the 60's. How nice was that? We still stay in touch.

I also bought some cds from a fellow after having bought just one, and he gave me a tremendous deal because I told him my Dizzy Gillespie story, I mean cheap! He wants me to write a book, and he will publish it. Wish I could remember more, and then I might consider it.

Lots of nice people out there to deal with, and a lot of them are record store owners, moving merchandise through eBay to expidite sales as they might need a faster cash flow than would ordinarily happen in their shop.

Fun place to shop, and even though they aren't susposed to, a lot of them will sell to you independent of eBay, which is how I bought some hard to find not well known recordings, at a great price.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the replies - I may have confused the issue slightly, but what I was looking for was a reference book which gave estimated prices for second hand Vinyl.

Tonym gave me the answer to this by mentioning the Penguin Guide, which I managed to pick up today - so question answered.
The "What The Dickens" part was only an example as to why I needed some sort of price guide - sorry for the confusion

This book is published in France, but is in both French English, and is helpful for European stuff

Saundra, please consider it. Love it when you give us your stories on this Board!

For anything vaguely rare, Record Collector magazine's annual Rare Record Price Guide is huge, comprehensive, and pretty accurate. Unfortunately, most decent secondhand record shops use it as a reference, which is why it's so hard to find a rare bargain nowadays...

The guides by their very nature are out of date before they even go to press. Now that we're in the eBay era, all the rules as to "value" of "collectibles" have gone out the window. You're better off googling the album and find out how much it's selling for, not how much people are asking. Price guides are useful for insuring a collection, but not much else. Lots of titles aren't even listed in the guides.

I should add that I have come across listings of rare albums in guides valued at 20 to 30 bucks, and thought I should be so lucky to find that album for so cheap!

But the price guides are just as useless as they were three years ago, if not more so. I was advising all readers to redirect their spending...
