Hello all, I would like to share with you an event I attended last night. The campus had the Dave Pietro Quartet come and perform live. If you are not familiar with this group, Dave Pietro plays sax and has performed with people ranging from Liza Manelli to Blood, Sweat, & Tears. He currently has four albums out with his most recent one being his interpretation of Stevie Wonder's music called "Standard Wonder." He is a phenomenal sax player as he showed many times throughout the performance with stunning solos. The rest of his group includes David Berkman on piano, John Herbert on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums. All of the group members played several awesome solos throughout the performance. The songs they played last night were mostly from his "Standard Wonder" album, but there were two songs that he said were from his second album called "I Should Have Known" and "This Is New." The songs they performed from the Stevie Wonder album were "Another Star," "Smile Please," "Too High," and "Go Home." All the songs were amazing! Dave shared with the audience a slightly humorous story about his newest album "Standard Wonder." He said that he had everything setup and ready to go to record this new album but he was having doubts about re-doing Stevie Wonder's music. He said he was hesitant about it because Stevie Wonder's music is so good the way it is and who was he to change that? So then Dave says he was shopping for headphones in New York (where he's from I guess) at this store and who does he bump into? Stevie Wonder himself! So, Dave decided to go ahead with the album and he was glad he did.

Well, that's everything from me. Thanks for checking it out and if you have any personal views on this group, I would like to hear them. Have a good one everybody!

Stevie Wonder is irrelevant.

.....kidding. That sounds like a good show. Dave is a good player (even though he's a white boy- lol) and he's also a very approachable guy. Not everyone can do the clinician gig, but he has the personality for it. Did you go to his clinic?

In reply to Pharaohrock, no I did not go to his clinic. I am fairly new to the whole jazz-thing. I used to listen mostly to classic rock like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, CCR, etc. But just recently I thought I would give jazz a try and I found that I like it. One more thing Pharaohrock, what's with the "white boy" comment? I know you are just kidding about it but do you really think that the only good jazz musicians are African-American? I thought that Dave Pietro's performance was phenominal. Either way, thanks for the input.

Yes, he is, and a nice guy, to boot. I saw him most recently with the superb Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra, which is also something to watch (and is about to record a new CD).

They are all wonderful players. Nasheet was at the Vanguard two weeks ago with the Fred Hersch trio. He was great then too.

Glad that you're exploring jazz!

BTW, is your name really Mick Jagger?? ;)
