I just finished reading this, what a great book. Hawes seems to have had a terrific sense of humour and a very poetic imagination. Although he went through really bad times, the overall impression of the book and Hawes himself, was entirely positive.
Anyone else enjoy this?

I read it about ten years ago, and remember it as one of the most honest and well written autobiographies in jazz.

Wow! I didn't think anyone was currently reading this great book. I was fairly new to Hamp's music at the time it came out and the book blew me away. I still think it's the best book describing the scene ever. A great pianist left behind more than just his wonderful recordings-he left us this marvelous book.
