Along the same theme as andreimatorin's question, "Who's the hottest saxophonist right now in the jazz scene according to you?", who is the hottest trumpeter right now in the jazz scene?
My favourite has got to be Wynton Marsalis.
(I apologise if this question has been asked before, I must have missed it.)

Dunno who's the hottest, but my currently active faves are:
Wadada Leo Smith,
My main man Dennis Gonzalez,
Toshinori Kondo,
Baikida Carroll,
Roy Campbell ,
Pino Minafra
Non-jazz improv: Greg Kelley
Sometimes Jazz: Axel Dorner
I know I'm missing some.

I dont wanna bust your bubble or anything and i dont mean this in any disrespect to pious but many of my teachers at new england conservatory prep school and other musicians have something against wynton marsalis... i really haven't listened to him a lot, but i was wondering if anyone who knows about this cares to expand on this?

Dave Douglas is the hottest trumpeter right now. No question. Whether you like him or not, he's always being mentioned. Especially with Jazztronica being the new buzzword. Best? I dunno. Hottest? Absolutely...

Well, I'm only 17 and have only been in to jazz for about three years so I don't know very much about jazz in comparison to everybody here. I haven't heard that many trumpeters that I like, but ones I do like include Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy and Sonny Grey. Could you possibly give me some suggestions for different trumpeters that I should listen to.

Marsalis has one of the clearest, purest tones ever, and his classical stuff is superb, but I agree with many who say his solos are bloodless and unimaginative and he couldn't swing if you hung him.
If you're still reading this - ;) - today's hot and good include Nicholas Payton, Ryan Kisor, Marcus Printup, Terell Stafford.

For me, Dave Douglas, without a doubt. Dr. J's list is very good, although I would add Roy Hargrove, Terence Blanchard, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Ballou, Cuong Vu. There are, of course, many, many great trumpeters throughout jazz history. Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis are probably the best known. There are so many others worth listening to I'll just name a few at random: Roy Eldridge, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Shavers, Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham. Enjoy.

Mike McKenna, out of Boston, is really outstanding. Also, for some more well known artists: Roy Hargrove and Saskia Laroo really swing. Jim Rotundi also cooks.
Wynton is a good trumpet player (classical), but he can't play Jazz.

I'm in agreement about Jim Rotondi. The best place to hear Terrell Stafford is an excellent CD by Matt Wilson called "Arts And Crafts".

I just saw the Matt Wilson Quartet last night at the RegattaBar in Boston. This was the first time I had seen the group and it was a lot of fun! He was playing with reedmen Andrew D'Angelo and Jeff Lederer and bassist Yosuke Inoue. The group was playing with such energy and "Cooperation" (the name of one of the tunes in his new CD on the Palmetto label) with each other. It was a joy to see them live.

Of the younger trumpets in the mainstream area I prefer Payton to Marsalis, Hargrove etc. IMO Payton has a warmer sound and makes me feel he means what he says, while Marsalis a find a little to academic. It might be a point a know Marsalis from records only, while Payton I've heard live on several occasions.
And then you have Jeremy Pelt, a young man with a lot of promise - playing with Ralph Peterson at the moment, I believe.
Another trumpeter not mentioned is Thomas Stanko from Poland, wide, open sound and extremely inventive phrasing.
