So I've been listening to jazz for just about a year now. I'd tried listening to it before, but couldn't get past the "easy listening" sound of what I'd heard. What ended up hooking me was some of the rougher and weirder stuff.

These Ellery Eskelin/Andrea Parkins/Jim Black CD have been my favorites so far. 12(+1) Imaginary Views sold me on jazz for good; I've still yet to find something that's hit me this hard. I've also been loving a bunch of the other things Jim Black has played on (Chris Speed's Emit, Pachora, Hilmar Jensson, but not Alasnoaxis). I've also loved the newer Spring Heel Jacks, Tim Berne's Science Friction (but The Sublime And sounds pretty samey to me), Dave Douglas (especially Constellations), and the faster tracks on "Airports for Light".

For older stuff that I've heard--and I know I've got a bunch to go through still--I've been most excited by Out to Lunch.

So. I've still got a bunch of exploring to do. Anyone care to throw out a few suggestions?

How about Jason Moran trio, The Bad Plus, EST,(they're all piano trioes, but trios with a difference) and of course some wild Charles Mingus like "Mingus.Mingus, Mingus" and "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady". You also should check out Ken Vandermark, his SchoolDays project is really something worth following these days.

Have you tried the Gerry Hemingway trio with Ellery? "Devils Paradise" comes to mind.

I'm afraid to ask what you consider "easy listening", but anyway...

Jemeel Moondoc - Spirit House, New World Pygmies 2 (1's ok, but 2 is better), and Revolt of the Negro Lawn Jockeys

Test - s/t

Actually, just get anything on eremite records

Mark Helias - Fictionary, Loopin' the Cool

Peter Brotzmann - Little Birds Have Fast Hearts 1 and 2

DKV Trio - Wels/Chicago

Anthony Braxton - Dortmund (Quartet) 1977

EVAN PARKER TRIO - At the Vortex

Mat Maneri - Sustain

I could go on...
