does anyone know if there is a discography out on woody herman....a friend of mine is searching for a song he did "my friend gonzales" and wanted to know if it is on any of his recordings....:smokin:

The tune is My Pal Gonzales. It was recorded for Columbia around 1947.. Shorty Rogers composition.(?)

I suspect it might only be available on vinyl.

I know I have it or had it somewhere... possibly Gonzales succummed to flood waters...

There were other broadcast recordings 47 -48 which have been issued on records thgat release such things Swingtime etc.

It might be in, but I doubt it, the recent Blowin' up a Storm set on Sony / Columbia.

It no doubt will be in the upcoming Herman Mosaic ( if it ever materialises:confused: :confused: :confused: )

There's a version of 'My Pal Gonsales' on the new Hep release, Woody Herman and The Second Herd - The Road Band 1948 Volumes I and 2.
Hep CD 18(2). 2CD set.

Victor - Lord lists the studio version as being reissued on Ajaz 292. That is the only lp listing for the studio recording (done Dec 30, 1947) I have version 3 which may be outdated. Classics only seems to have done Herman through 1941. I can tell you for sure it is not in the Woody Herman Columbia box, nor in the Proper box.

There are several versions on lps of airshots, no doubt that is the source of the Hep disc. The airshots listed in Lord are March 2, 5, and 7 of 1948. Unfortunately I don't have any of those dates in my collection so I cannot offer to share a copy with you.
