Alright, so what kind of food goes down best with jazz? If we can do it with wine, cocktails and cigars, we may as well get on the food tip too...

So, in my little food fetish fantasy, I've convinced Anyella to hop on a plane and come meet me for my birthday. Of course, there will be jazz music, and dancing close enough to get the cats over at the 700 club riled, but, what to serve? Oysters on half shell and Grant Green's Idle Moments? My famous 1/2 lb. crab cakes and Billie Holiday in good voice? How about New York Strips, garlic mashed potatoes and Miles' My Funny Valentine?

What jazz/food/ambiance combo would you come up with?

Chicken and Waffles + Jimmy Smith/Russell Malone/Grady Tate......that's a no-brainer.

I don't know that food really does justice to the subtlety of music Paul. You go to the Blue Note or any other supper club for that matter, and there's all these dishes named after musicians....Gumbo, as you can imagine- is the perennial choice for representing Louis Armstrong. Whatever.......at this rate, pairing jazz with food means little more than putting musicians in a stereotypical culture-box. I guess by this logic, Joe Lovano would be Lasagna or some other kind of pasta, and Chick Corea needs to have his own kind of tapas.

Actually, there's a Joey D- Jack McDuff record that openly accepts such stereotypes, called "Pork Chops and Pasta." Maybe they could care less or it's said in humor, but I'm telling ya man, this food thing is dangerous!

lol.

and in any event, miles doesn't have a damn thing to do with STEAK. Save that for Gene Ammons or Ben Webster. Miles is more like angel hair pasta with spicy sauce.....

Amen, Oakland & Victor!

I grew up in the Bay Area, so I feel that Jazz Yoshi Sushi vibe... and there's nothin' like it.

And for those of you who have not acquired the taste of the soosh, let me tell ya why sushi goes so well with jazz. It's because the ritual of sushi is an artform in and of itself. It's so yummy. It's so complex. There are no forks to make noise, just quiet little chopsticks. It can be spicy, it can be crunchy, it can be smooth. It can be weird and funky (ala Octopus or Eel) or it can be straight ahead (ala Ahi)... and it's usually served up by some of the most endearing, kind, and talented people on the planet.

You can eat sushi slow, you can eat it fast. You can never eat too much. You can socialize while you eat it, or you can eat it alone. Some people take their sushi very seriously, others just want something light and easy to swallow.

Y'er gettin' my point, I'm sure.

Mmmmmmm, sushi. Methinks I need some now....

Jazz gratifies the senses and food gratifies the senses. I'm currently on a diet..I'm easting less and listening more. IT WORKS.
....of course cutting the carbs helps too.

I have an alter ego completely devoted to New York Food at Salli Vates' NY Food Page (http://www.sallivates.com) .

By the way, Gene Bertoncini plays a wonderful solo guitar set at Le Madeleine on W. 43rd St. in New York. They serve a terrific lemon custard tart, so all of your senses experience pleasure.
