Here's one to think about..
For those living in the UK they may have come across the new Renault Clio advert featuring Thiery Henry and Animal from the muppets. It's set in a cliche jazz club where Henry is sat at the drums and plays a little rhythm tune along with the upright. I wonder if anyone could tell me whether or not this is a real recording by a real jazz band and of course if so, who and what?
And for something completley different.
My tastes of Jazz rather shamefully come from adverts, television, films and the rest of the ghastly media garb. But I was fortunate recentley in being able to witness a 7 piece jazz from my home-town (www.silverleafjazzband.co.uk) and enjoyed it. So I want to rectify my ignorance of this part of the music world.
My main music passion is punk rock. Not somewhere you "cultured" lot would expect someone to aquire a penchant for good music. But that's a point I would be happy to argue to any critic. :) I also enjoy Chuck Berry, Fugazi and Jamaican reggae influenced dub and ska.
So considering aformentioned music tastes, could anyone recommend me any "Earthy" (for lack of any other apt adj.) Jazz music. I really like rhythmically (upright and percussion wise)orientated jazz music, hence the question on the advert.
Any help would be fantastic.
Jim :)

Punk Rock? Chuck Berry? Both of these had strong Blues connections filtered through Rock & Roll. Try the proper box set "The Big Horn - The history of the Honkin' Screamin' Saxophone" This is early Rhythm and Blues which ultimately became the main source for Rock&Roll.
Also, not really mainstream (small m) jazz but Fela Kuti might go hand in hand with your Ska and Reggae.
There are plenty of small group works out there with lead horn + Bass and Drums and optionally piano or organ. Everyone has their own preferences
PS I didn't know who it was in the ad, but do you think he is actually playing the drums, or is it an overdub?

Thiery Henry, Arsenal and France football player...
Maybe he was taught to play the little part, maybe he's just acting, I don't really know to be honest. It certainley looks like he's playing it.

If that Silver Leaf crowd pushed your buttons, I suggest exploration of some/all of the following:
Jelly Morton and the Red Hot Peppers
Sidney Bechet
Louis Armstrong Hot 5 and Hot 7
(These are the roots from which the Silver Leaf band presumably draws their sound. Any good compilation of their work - and there are dozens in each case - should get you going).
ReBirth Brass Band and other New Orleans brass bands
(Here you'll get the original brass sound/lineup of the marching bands of a century ago with plenty of contemporary funk and attitude. Think of it as trad jazz with PUNK attitude!).

Most people who are into that type of music you mention, also like Ramsey Lewis, my favorites of his are "Raunchy" and what is it? "Good times?," I'm terrible with names, but his music is good, and hey, I grew up on Chuck Berry and even got to meet him, and have a nice conversation with him one night, he is a great guy, and fun to see, a funny experience, one I remember like it was yesterday.
Try the Lighthouse Allstars, and their Witchdoctor, also other tunes from that era. Ray Brown has some groovy albums recorded with any number of greats, and if you like bass fiddle, you will be impressed. There is so much to choose from with this man, hit the sites that let you hear snippits of the cuts on the albums, like "Tower Records", and others, also hit Drummersworld.com, and on the cuts of drummers you will hear Brown and others, and since you are into percussion, that is a great site to visit, great bio's, photo's and songs to listen to. This is a great resource, and you'll hear Ray on several cuts, and I don't think you can't help but be impressed with him. Maybe Mingus on bass might be more to your liking, they are all good, and then there is Cal Tjader on Conga's, that is an unusual percussion trip. I had the one where he played Bongo's and enjoyed it tremendously. I really like Sonny Rollins album "Way Out West", Shelly Mann is the drummer there, and it is an unusual album, as much for the old Western songs they play, as for the style they play in.
For a different take on piano, try Earl Garner, his style is unusual, as is Monks, Lots and lots to choose from so just hit that Drummer site to begin with and go from there, Tower Records, CD Baby, and the others, can't remember the other ones right now, but not hard to find.
The other members can put you onto the newer musicians, they know about them a lot more than I do.
