I need some advice from you folks with an audio problem. I have first class equipment but its some 25-30 years old. McIntosh electronics and ML-4 speakers. No problem ever with the electronics, but over the years the cones of the two 8 inch midrange and eight 12 woofers have deteriorated.( I live next to salt water)
McIntosh wants to charge over 2000 bucks to recone and ship the speakers and I figure as much as I love the system, I can do better matching the bottom frequencies while keeping the 12 remaining higher frequency horns etc.
I am aware that I have to match the crossover frequencies and that speakers of that era worked at lower impedance and lower power than modern ones. I think I can do this with powered woofers to solve the latter problem. Have any of you done this before or encountered the problem?
Cambridge soundsystems seems to have the kind of gear I figure I need. Have any of you dealt with them or used their gear? Any advice would be gratefully received, thanks.
