Ok I hope I have not over stayed my welcome;) but I have another question on what I consider to be new jazz. If someone asked you to compile a list of the 10-15 must have Jazz CD's of the 1970's through the year 2000 what would that list look like? In other words if someone told you they were new to jazz and they wanted to start a collection starting from the year 1970, what would be the 10-15 must have cd's to begin a collection?

Here is an example of a must have collection of a different era (starter kit).

Thank you

One other thing if possible can anyone share the type of classical music they listen to? Perhaps you could share your favorite classical CD or favorite composer? Is there any type of classical music you feel resembles jazz such as Debussy or maybe yo-yo Ma?

Besides classic FM London Which imo opinion is the best calssical radio station in the world I listen to this station from Japan (2nd best imo). One of my favorites. (need Cable/DSL connection)

I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Thank you again.

I happen to like the mix of classical and Jazz done by the Jacques Loussier Trio. His Play Bach series from the early 60s to 70s, actually got me interested in "straight" Bach. Anyone from the UK (and perhaps elsewhere) who remembers the Hamlet Cigar advert accompanied by "Aria From Suite No. 3 in D" (OK Air on the G String) will have heard Jacques Loussier accompanied by Pierre Michelot and Christian Garros

OK, I'll start.

Mike Nock - In Out & Around
Larry Coryell - Foreplay
Miroslav Vitous - Infinite Search (may be 1969)
If - If3
Manfred Mann Chapter III - Volume Two
Miles Davis - Live Around the World
Michael Brecker - Tales From The Hudson
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - XXL
Charlie Byrd & Cal Tjader - Tambu
Mark Murphy - Bridging the Gap

I reserve the right to change my mind and come back and edit!

Loussier is one of these artists who divides opinion. Personally I like his ideas. I have heard classical pianists say that he is too heavy handed, and does not create enough variation in his tone, essentially criticising him for a lack of subtlety. Some Jazz fans do not look on the music as being Jazz, but as being another one of these bastard offsprings from the music world.

Hey, what the hell, I have been listening to him on and off since the mid 60s, and have heard him live a couple of times. I like what he does when I am in the mood for that type of music

************

There's no-one quite like Debussy.

Ravel is similar but very distinctive.

Delius - an English composer who had a rare European sensibility and lived much of his life in France - produced many minatures that have that dreamy, dissolving feel. There's a very nice 2CD collection on EMI of 60s recordings by Sir John Barbarolli.

Check out the Classical Music Corner thread for lots of recommendations:

I want to thank everone for the great jazz artists you recommended. A lot of them I know however some of the artists I did not. In particular Joe Lovano, Bill Charlap, Jacques Loussier and Norma Winstone. I just purchased CDs of these artists. I have not finished going through the list. I'll try to get through it by next week.

btw-- I am a big Liane Foly fan. I really enjoy her music. Is anyone familiar with her work? What genere would she fall into? (just curious)

Also can anyone recommend any French or Italian jazz-vocal artists?

TIA

Afraid nor. Long OOP as an LP.

I'm surpised the Jazz House label run by Ronnie Scott's has not released it - they've put out other stuff in the Pye 'Ronnie Scott' series that was around briefly in the late 70s.

Considered the Top Jazz FM Radio Station, KKJZ from California State University at Long Beach, is on the Internet 24 hours a day at website: http://www.KKJZ.org and has a fun list of their Top 88 Jazz Albums & CD's of all time (think their FM call number is 88.7 on the FM Dial), and the list includes: "Time Out" by Dave Brubeck, "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis, "Song for my Father" by Horace Silver, and many Albums that we enjoy; it is a great list for Beginning Jazz Fans, and a fun list for the rest of us (whether we agree with it or not), be sure to "Listen on Line" and check out that list wjen you have some leisure time for fun....
