I've always been interested in jazz journalism because I really enjoy writing reviews on live concerts and CDs. Do I go to college for music or do I go for journalism? Will I have to double major?
I'm just wondering if anyone is a music journalist here. It would be a big help. I've done a lot of research online and in school but it has really amounted to nothing. Suggestions...
Oh... and I am new to the website so feel free to write me a message, it's lonely being new:)

This is a BIG question, one that goes way beyond "really enjoying" doing CD reviews. I haven't the time today, but I'll give you some of my thoughts in a day or so - for what they're worth. And welcome to the board!

As the Dean of American Jazz Humorists®, my recommendation is to find your voice and use it to advance both the music and writing in general. Be true to your passions, set yourself apart, and don't worry if not everyone "gets" you.

I second The Genius. My own experience is that I used to play professionally, got disabled, started posting on bulletin boards, and now I write for AAJ under my real name (Marc Meyers). I love jazz too much, and writing about it seemed to be a natural after I could no longer play. Follow your heart.

i have a journalism degree and have written music reviews in the past for some local and regional magazines. it seems that everyone i know who got a journalism degree is doing non-journalism work, and everyone i know who got an english degree is now a journalist.
my advice is to NOT go to liberal arts college for any reason, unless you want to be a college dj. for the most part, music classes in college will only help you if your aim is to learn to play an instrument.
