I am listening to this today at work. Lovely. Intense in spots, pastoral in others. Stanley Cowell is a delight.

Don't have Why Not, but find the same values in Afternoon of a Georgia Faun. Love Three for Shepp and Porto Novo as well.

This is a truly beautiful album, in fact it's the record that really got me hooked on Brown. There are many more great records worth searching out....

I also highly recommend this album. It also got me into Marion Brown.

Ah, yet another album to add to the shopping list. I'm going to DMG tomorrow, they ought to have this one.

Beautiful album. By the way, the cover photo was taken on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, even if the image does not show the avenue.

Good to hear about Marion Brown (usually, here, when people speak about an alto player it's about Kenny Garret. A matter of taste certainly).
He is a great musician, very much underrated.
It's a nice person to speak with too.
I've seen him three times in concert (two duos: one with Steve McCall, the other with the late Mal Waldron and once in a quartet setting).
All his records are worst to have, even those Japanese who are almost impossible to find.
Aniway, his best, for me, are, so far, the two he cuts for ESP, "Three for Shepp" on Impulse! and the very great "Porto Novo" who, currently, is available on Black Lion (hope than all of this details doesn't sound too "pretentious" to the so call Pharaohrock).

Lemo, Black Lion's Alan Bates is not the english actor. He is a jazz critic and record producer.

Brown's early-70s Impulse! albums (GEECHEE RECOLLECTIONS & VISTA) are all worth seeking out on LP. GEECHEE RECOLLECTIONS is somewhat in the spirit of AFTERNOON OF A GEORGIA FAWN, but a bit "earthier", and VISTA is extremely interesting for having a "pop" (as in populist) flavor to it - the kind of "smooth" date that shows that music of substance and popular appeal are not automatically incompatable.

I see no mention of the Fontana date, The Visitor. The band includes Alan Shorter, Grachan Moncur III, Bennie Maupin, Dave Burrell, Reggie Johnson and Beaver Harris.

I wasn't familiar with "Why Not? (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=3397269&style=music&frm=lk_jzmtz)," so I looked it up: from 1966, it's Brown's second ESP release and includes Stanley Cowell, Sirone and Rashied Ali.
It's available on a Dutch import (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=3397269&style=music&frm=lk_jzmtz) pressing.
I'll have to add it to my want list.

"Juba-Lee" is the other Fontana date and the only one I know. Same line-up(if memory serves).Always been one of my favorite Marion Brown.

Are THE VISITOR and JUBA-LEE the same date?
Brown's DUETS on Arista / Freedom is also worth investigating, and still shows up in vinyl bins with some regularity.

Why Not? is excellent.
My other favority is Songs of Love and Regret - 1986 duo with Mal Waldron that is supposed to be reissued this year on CD by Freelance records.
Pensive and tender.

i'll have to pick that up. i know where i can get it on vinyl. the only other marion brown recordings i have are "three for trane" and his work with shepp...was he on "fire music" or "four for trane"? or both? i can't remember. ("four for trane" would make sense, since he did a record called "three for shepp.")

Brown's on FIRE MUSIC. John Tchicai's on FOUR FOR TRANE.

i could have sworn tchicai was on "fire music." that was the cause of the confusion.

I don't want to be a shill for emusic.com, but they have a 50 free downloads deal and they have both of Marion Brown's ESP albums available for download. The only drag about the deal is that you have to sign up with a credit card, but you can cancel after you get your free downloads.
They do have quite a large jazz selection, though the sound quality sometimes leaves much to be desired (especially with the Fantasy records stuff).

I was under the impression this date was called Juba-Lee. Either way, it's a goodie. Pretty noisy, though, so you'd better be into that. Nothing like Why Not?. For what it's worth, my favorite is the self-titled ESP date.
