Beside this new Braxton from Leo records there is also one from Delmark. It's a quartet recording of his GTM. The Leo is also a GTM work. Both releases are of recordings that are from a couple years ago.

There is also a new Braxton Solo 2CD release from Brandon Evans label Parallactic. It was recorded in NYC in 2002. I am not sure if this is a CDR or regular CD.

Parallactic Online Site (http://www.parallactic.com/index1.html)

This site is being revamped so I am not sure how well it is working at the moment.

You may not know who Wally Shoup is but I highly suggest you give his trio a try. He has been keeping the improvisational fires burning here in Seattle for quite some time. He sorely deserves wider recondition.

THE WALLY SHOUP TRIO : FUSILLADES & LAMENTATIONS

I just received a press release from Leo Records, and it mentions a special offer which is not mentioned on the website.

Leo has a limited time special offer for these 6 new releases.
Buy 3 - get 1 free and buy 4 get - 2 free.
Shipping is also very reasonable (1 GBP regardless of order size and destination)!

I was planning to freeze my buying for some time, but these releases look way too tempting... I guess I'll order:

CD LR 362 - PATRICK SCHEYDER: SOLO PIANO II

CD LR 363 - DOMINIC DUVAL / JOE MCPHEE / JOHN HEWARD: UNDERSOUND II

CD LR 364 - THE WALLY SHOUP TRIO : FUSILLADES & LAMENTATIONS (I don't really know Shoup, but since Johnny recommends it so enthusiastically...)

CD LR 365 - ACTIS BAND : GARIBALDI

Mnytime, can you comment on the sound quality of the Paralactic releases. I know the packaging is minimal...

Also, have you heard by chance the Sonny Simmons solo CD on Parallactic (Parallactic 51)? - I really like Simmons at his best, but he is so uneven...

I was absolutely thrilled when I found out about Shoup's new disc. Has anyone heard it yet?

It's very good. I hadn't heard him before. Anyone sense any Evan Parker influence?

I don't know how the Simmons or the new Braxton solo sound like. I only have a few Parallactic releases but they sound ok. But don't expect to hear SACD quality either. :D

I am not sure if the Simmons and Braxton solo recordings are out on CDR or regular CD. The Parallactic CD I have are CDR.

There is also a new Sonny Simmons Quartet out on Parallactic called - Renegade Society New York 2002. Downtown Music Gallery has a small review about it in the new releases for 3/7/03.

Since they appear to be working on upgrading the Parallactic site I have not been able to send any emails to ask any questions. The "contact" section is not working yet so I can find what the email is. If I find out anything either way I will let you know. Please let me know if you hear anything.

Just received it today and listening to it right now for the first time. Excellent stuff! I like Shoup's sound (it's quite unique, don't you think?) and ideas a lot. I am not sure about the Evan Parker influence, though - Shoup sounds more lively and relaxed to me...
Bass and drums are very tasteful as well.
Bravo!

Who are the others in the Wally Shoup trio? I once saw Shoup play with Nels Cline (gtr) and a guy named Toshi Makihara on drums. It was pretty cool, really (REALLY) loud free-improv. Nels stole the show, for me, but that might be because most of the time he was way louder than the others.

The drummer in that trio, I thought, was quite unusual. He had a kind of cave-man style where he would just bash the crap out of his kit. It must have been exhausting -- even more exhausting than for other free drummers, because he didn't seem to bend his wrists at all. At every strike of the drums, he would raise his entire fully-flexed arms. Not very graceful. I have an album with him on it, a group called "All Time Present", but I think he's only on a couple of tracks. I'm interested in hearing him some more, if only to see if his approach to the drums actually sounds good to me. Is he the drummer on the above mentioned disk?

Reuben Radding - bass
Bob Rees - drums

I wouldn't call it really loud (although it is definitely free). Drummer is very versatile, reminicing of Andrew Cyrille occasionally.

Hi all. Thanks for your interest.

Parallactic Recordings 2003 are not CDR's, they are CD's. Unless otherwise specified on the website, which is up and running.
The solo Sonny Simmons CD is out now, and has shipped to all who ordered it (as of March 31st)

http://www.parallactic.com

Ok, you can hear the whole first track on parallactic.com (it is internet sound quality on the site, but the CD is studio quality sound. It will give you a sense of the music._

This is an incredible document of the great veteran master, in top form on alto saxophone, playing three originals. It is an intimate, focused recording of the great man pouring his heart out for you. His laser-beam tone could cut the universe in half if it were a cloud in the sky. Sonny does not preach, he speaks the truth about his life experience through his music. He is one of my favorite saxophonists ever.
Sonny was recorded solo first in 1991, and that recording never came out, as is typical of the 'free jazz' music complex. I have a license to release the 1991 solo this year, and it will appear as a limited edition. (my license to that one is limited). He plays a tremendous version of Music Matador on that one, solo.

I am also producing a full-length documentary film (90 minutes) on Sonny Simmons, which I shot and am editing currently. This will be available on DVD sometime in the Summer.
- Brandon Evans

The new sonny Simmons solo, out now, was recorded in January 2003 in NYC>

Also Coming in April:

in preparation / (2 CD SET) featuring:
ANTHONY BRAXTON, SONNY SIMMONS, BRANDON EVANS, ANDRE VIDA, MIKE PRIDE, SHANIR BLUMENKRANZ,
playing the music of Braxton, Evans, & Simmons, arranged by Andre Vida.

[pitch text:] (excuse the commercial:)
This was an amazing session by this dynamic sextet, recorded February 8th, 2003 by Jon Rosenberg at Wesleyan University. This outstanding group of amazing musicians came together for one day and recorded nearly two hours of intense, original compositions which provide the foundation for incredible improvisations, dynamic group interplay, and scorching individual solo statements from each of the members. This was an historical event for all, and this meeting between veteran masters Anthony Braxton and Sonny Simmons, and the younger generation of the saxophonist intelligentsia, Brandon Evans and Andre Vida, joined by the great young master drummer, Mike Pride, and master bassist and oud player, Shanir Blumenkranz, is a crucial document of creative music in the year 2003. Pre-order it now and show your support. Only on parallactic recordings 2003.

instrumentation:
ANTHONY BRAXTON - alto, soprano, sopranino saxophones
SONNY SIMMONS - alto saxophone, english horn
BRANDON EVANS - c-soprano, tenor saxophones, bass clarinet
ANDRE VIDA - baritone saxophone, arrangements
SHANIR BLUMENKRANZ - bass, oud
MIKE PRIDE - drums, percussion, glockenspiel, microcassette

thanks again to all who have supported our efforts. You have made a difference.
