Lets pick up where we left off then...
Today my $10 copy of Yusef Lateef at Cranbrook arrived courtesy of Prickly Pair.
I don't know if there is an offical vinyl classification for 'doormat' but there ought to be.
Actually I knew it was in compromised condition but it is listenable.
So this is Yusef Lateef at Cranbrook by the Yusef Lateef Quintet, Argo LP 634.
Frank Morelli, baritone sax
Terry Pollard, piano
William Austin, Bass and Rebab
Frank Gant, Drums, Gong and Finger Cymbals
Recorded April 9, 1958
Morning (Lateef) 15:15
Brazil (Barroso) 2:31
Let Every Soul Say Amen (Lateef) 3:40
Woody'n You (Gillespie) 16:16
The most immediately striking thing is the cover which is a so called 'Kangaroo Spilt Pack'. It is cut in two down the middle to form two pouches. I have *never* seen this before.
The live recording does not favor piano and bass, but the horns sound well. Probably for completists only, but an interesting example of how far ahead Lateef was on the whole modal/spiritual/world music thing.
Anyone ever seen these kangaroo pack sleeves before?

Johnny Griffin's Argo date JG was also released in a "Kangaroo split pack". The 2002 Japanese 24-bit remastered reissue of JG comes in a replica of that sleeve.

WHAT???
You mean the entire jacket literally pulls in half? How wack is that?

Well... I'm easily thrilled, apparently...

I don't know if it's a greatest find. But I managed to pick up and incredibley CLEAN copy of Sonny Sitt's "Soul Electricity." Man, Don Patterson, Billy James are kicking it into overdrive as usual with Stitt. Plus, Billy Butler on guitar is nice. All standards with the varitone. Great session. It really cranks on my stereo. The CD reissue was nice, but this clean vinyl copy kills it. THE BASS. And that's coming from somebody who's not a real vinyl nut (but close;) )

No man, I think that's TOTALLY cool. Is there any overlap between the halves?

No overlap at all. Just cut clean down the middle.
The front cover design is a block of dull orange on the left with the word Lateef running horizontally, while the left half is the photo of a fountain with the word Cranbrook written vertically.
I was hoping to post a pic but the camera isnt working at this end - I'll give it a go another time.

Please do. The concept is tripping me out. (yes, I'm a grown man and I still say "tripping me out". I do however, wear Dockers on occasion, so all hope is not lost. On either end...)

Bobby Hutcherson's "Live at Montreux" gathering dust at a local CD store ($12.99). Queried the BNBB about it, got several immediate "go grab it" responses, and I'm glad I did.
Even for someone who is kind of lukewarm on the vibes, this is a great date- excellent interplay between Hutch and Woody Shaw...

I found a sealed lp of Bram Tchaikovsky's: Strange Man, Changed Man for $3.00. I always thought this was a great rock record, it has that crappy sound like it was produced on a $50.00 budget that all great punk records have. I'm almost as happy as when I found Roman Holliday: Cookin' on the Roof . Ah! Punk Rock memories!

Sorry, I'm probably the only one who still gets excited about finding these "New Wave/Punk" lp's from the late 70's that have never made it to cd

I can't picture this 'split pack' concept. I've got an Ellington Back-To-Back/Side-By Side with an opening on the left for one LP, on the right for the other: is that it?

My best finds were the long out of print Clubhouse by Dexter Gordon for $10.00 in the original longbox and the Nat King Cole Mosaic set for $150.
I had a roomate once who came home once with a box of 50's Verve and Emarcy albums in mint shape. Some had David Stone Martin Covers. There were more than 30 LPs.
He got the box for $10 from an estate sale.

Found the following on a trip last week:
Johnny Coles - Little Johnny C (Conn)
Jutta Hipp - With Zoot Sims (Conn)
Horace Parlan - On the Spur of the Moment (Conn)
Chet Baker with Russ Freeman (West Coast Classics)
Howard McGhee/Kenny Drew (Conn)
All were sealed, for $12 each. I plan on selling most of them. The best thing for me, I guess, was that I had never seen any of these before.

Found Duke Pearson's THE RIGHT TOUCH for $5.99 at B & N the other night--I had a hunch to sort through all of the junk in the remainder bin, and said hunch was rewarded.

The "Kenny Burrell, Vol. 3" TOCJ over at Tower was a great 'find' for $8.99..........couldn't even squeeze that sucker out of Japan. Maybe I had my foot on the wrong throats over there ?

I just love it when I find out about a new target for acquisition and less than a week later I nab it :)
I was reading the booklet to the Joe Pass Mosaic set and I noticed a reference to the fact that Pass recorded several times as a sideman before getting his first leader date on Pacific Jazz. One of those was by someone named "Bumble Bee Slim" who turned out to be a Chicago blues man who had some success in the '30s. Once I did some more internet searching and learned who Bock recorded Slim with (Les McCann, Groove Holmes, Curtis Amy) I knew I had to search this one out.
Just my luck, it was already up on ebay, and I just won the sucker: :D

I had a couple of nice finds in Academy Records in NYC. I picked up Ben Webster's "Soulville" on Verve and Danny Zeitlin's contribution to the Maybeck Solo Piano series on Concord. One day I've got to reconcile the Maybeck discs with the ones I own to see what I am missing.
I was in Academy yesterday too and also saw an out of print Verve disc called Oscar Peterson with Sonny Stitt. When I went back today it was gone. I had to check to see if I already owned it. I didn't and it was gone when I went back.

So about a month ago I won (for less than $40) the oop Mosaic Eddie Condon set. It was from an estate sale (the jazz collector recently passed away) and it was only the five discs in the jewel cases - the box and booklets were apparently missing. That's why I got it so cheap.
Anyhow, earlier this week the very nice lady who was selling off the (her father's?) collection e-mailed me that she found the original box and booklet. She mailed them to me, so now I have a Condon Mosaic for less than the cost when new. :D

Some of these (most of these) might be worth keeping to listen to.

I'm going to keep the Coles and McGhee, which I've never heard. I have all the others in either the form I found them, or as TOCJ's or JRVG's. I also found a sealed Harold Vick "Steppin' Out," which I already have as a TOCJ. I think I'll sell the rest soon. I thought it would be nice to help some other people out, as I've seen request for all of these at one time or another. :)

Nope. That's not it. Imagine a square divided into two rectangles by a vertical cut down the middle. That's it.
When I have the cam working again I'll post a pic.
