Speaking of Oscar ---
Has anyone read his new autobiography? I just bought it...very interesting. He totally bashes Bud Powell in it though, and I already knew he didn't care too much for Bud's style of playing...but Oscar really bashes him hard here. Any comments?

I spoke to Oscar on tape in the '80s and he savaged Keith Jarrett. Called him "a comedian." SInce musicians so rarely speak out quite so savagely against their obviously talented colleagues (I'm not talking about Phil Woods' comments on Kenny G), it surprised me.
Nevertheless, I'll include Oscar (with Dave Young) in an all-Canadian jazz show I'm doing on July 1 (Canada Day) on PBS-FM here in Melbourne. These days, I'd rather hear Oliver Jones, who's also in the show.

Well about Oscar Peterson bashing Bud....ok: Another reason for me not to buy Peterson´s records. Anybody who bashes Bud can´t be my friend.
Maybe it´s some personal reasons, because Francis Paudras (the autor of "Dance of the Infidels", the best book about Bud Powell) remembers an incident, when Peterson was visiting Paris and went up on stage at the Café BlueNote, where Bud was working and played "All God´s Chillun got Rhythm" at a really fast tempo, but using all his clichés he always uses. Later, Bud played it and showed what´s "stuff".
And I remember another thing: Peterson dug Toshiko Akioshi (I wonder why because she was as near to Powell´s style as one can be), and Toshiko together with Bud wanted to visit Peterson at his hotelroom, but Peterson didn´t want to see Bud.
Damn....I´d make a deal with devil only to meet Bud:tearhair:
Until some time, even if Peterson didn´t knock me out as a musician, at least I enjoyed some of his music as easy-listening....but ...bashing Bud Powell....: one unkind word about Bud and you lost me forever

I'd be interested in hearing those comments about Jarrett, as I wrote a paper on the subject... Which i discussed in an earlier topic on the forum...

oscar says he prefers say art tatum, teddy wilson ,hank jones
he says that bud could start something cooking of,but did not finish it to its full possiblilities(pages 194 and 195), he did the trumpet and sax support section well but did not take up on the full possibilities of the piano (page 142)
there are an intresting series of musical portraits especially of norman granz, and those he worked with regularly, and details of coping with racism growing up and in the music business
the only person oscar is not very keen on, is charles mingus, who was threatening to punch him up
the drummers other than his regulars who are profiled are louie bellson, max roach, jeff hamilton, connie kay and art blaKEY
