Maybe someone who has the Watrous big band albums of the '70s can help me out. Exactly what tunes are on his Tiger of San Pedro album? I need titles and arrangers.

Just curious, are they refering to San Pedro in Southern California? Do you know?

Thanks very much for the valuable information from Lord.
One question, though. Are these names for real? A few of them sound like they might be pseudonyms. Does anybody know if some of these names need to be translated?

Those names are real ..and as far as I can tell ..correct ..
The second LP had some personnell changes ..the only ones I know of for sure were:

I was under the impression that Refuge, the album with your "Zip City" chart, preceded Tiger, the album with your "Sweet Georgia Upside Down" chart, or do I have them reversed?
You actually don't have these albums? Now I know they're ultra scarce!

You are correct, Refuge was Watrous' second album, Tiger was the third. I bought Refuge back when I was 13 and it's still in my collection (although I definitely played the grooves out of it!). I Also grabbed I'll Play for You, Watrous in Hollywood, La Zorra, and the Columbia repress of hits from MWR and Tiger (Bill Watrous). I bought them all as the were released and unfortunately haven't seen copies since.
I remember sneaking into a bar in Scottsdale, AZ when I was 16-ish to hear him play solo live. Absolutely amazing!

You are correct about the release order ..what I'm not positive about is in which order they were recorded ..
And no ..I no longer have the vinyl ..but I have a nice clean CD of each one that a friend kindly burned for me ..

Interesting comment.. I see used copies of bpth these albums regularily..in various states of repair, but always less than $5.00
Watrous' Famous Door albums are much harder to find.

Refuge was Watrous' second album,
Fifth, actually. There were two albums made for the MTA label in, I think, the late 1960s, then the first Famous Door, then the Columbia albums.
The one MTA album I have (LOVE THEMES FOR THE UNDERGROUND,THE ESTABLISHMENT &OTHER SUB CULTURES NOT YET KNOWN) is a trip - you've NEVER heard "easy listening" music this twisted. Avant-Mizak!

I stand corrected. I had MWR on the brain, I think. Anyway, I'll look for 'em!

While at college at Ohio University in 1976, Bill Watrous came to do a clinic and perform with our jazz ensembles. I was an incredible experience to see his mind work through all of those tunes and changes. We had a blast with him. What great memories!
I am looking for a CD of "Tiger of San Pedro" album. Do you know where it is available? I had a record of that but it was destroyed in a flood a while ago. Thanks for any help!

These albums were never released on CD. You'd have to transfer them from vinyl.

The only chance may be if Wounded Bird decides to release them, as they have done with most of (but with the exception of "M.F. Horn" NOT the BEST of) Maynard Feguson's Columbia albums. They've also released most of the rest of the Blood, Sweat & Tears albums and some choice MJQ. www.woundedbird.com : drop them an email.
There was a compilation CD of some of the material of the Watrous Columbia albums that was in print for about five minutes in the late 1980s/early 1990s. You might find that on e-bay.
Man, that was some great material!

Hi.
I am burning a cassette recording of Watrous' great Manhattan Wildlife Refuge onto CD and want to include as much information about the recording as possible. Could anyone send me the personnel, recording information and names of the tunes' composers? Thanks.

See post #3 ..
It does help to read the whole thread before posting!

I did read the entire thread. Post #3 refers to the "Tiger from San Pedro" album, not "Manhattan Wildlife Refuge". Do you have the information for that album? Does anyone else?
Thanks.
Bob

Here is what I get from the back of the album jacket:
Spain - written by Chick Corea, arranged by John La Barbera
Sho - written by Bill Berry
Dichotomy - written by John La Barbera
Zip City (my favorite) - written by Phil Kelly, who posts here (thanks, Phil)
Fourth Floor Walk-Up - written by Bill Watrous
Dee Dee - written by Bill Watrous (Dee Dee is his daughter Melody's nickname)
Ayo - written by Wayne Andre
Hope this helps,
Don

It's a Sherlock Holmes reference; Wisteria Lodge I believe.
