Just wondering if any other big fans of Tal Farlow's work out there. I was just listening to a Verve Elite reissue of This Is Tal Farlow and really enjoying it. I really like pretty much all of his work, but anyone else have any particular favorites?

One of the best Connoisseur Series cds is the Howard McGhee Vol 2 with Tal Farlow , Gyrce, Silver et al. Included also is Tal's quartet session on BN, great stuff on this one!:D

I like Tal Farlow. I wish there was more of his music available domestically. I picked up a copy of his Verve album "Tal" last year. I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

AfricaBrass, most of his Concord recordings should still be available. The old Verve/Norgran sessions are hard to find in stores, but there are usually several of those to be had on eBay.

Tal is a great disk, as are all those older sessions.

A more recent one you might like is Cooking on All Burners , which is on Concord and should be available, I think. Concord also recently rereleased a couple other of his late-70s sessions, I believe.

Any Tal farlow trios with Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke generally top my list.. News that the Fuerst Sets were recently reissued on a 2cd set by Fresh Sound was recently posted.
Though I have the Xanadu CD which has all but two of the tracks the Fresh Sounds is on my list

All the tracks, for those who don't know, are long 8 min and up "jams" good stuff.

Tal Farlow is great. It still blows my mind when I think about that fact that he couldn't read music and wasn't really musically trained. Anyway, the VEE "This is Tal Farlow" was my first exposure to his music, and I still listen to that disc frequently. I picked up the Japanese K2 of "The Return of Tal Farlow" last week, and that is also an excellent disc. I wish Verve would let Mosaic do a set of his Verve material. I emailed Mosaic about it and they said Verve had refused to release the material.

Farlow's Verve sessions are best of the lot. Hard to miss with any of them. Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow is out on Verve and should be available.

A session not discussed much is Trinity (1976) that was released on CD by Sony France a few years ago. An interesting session that fills the (huge) gap between the Verves and the Concords.

All Music Guide has a review here (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=1:42:47|PM&sql=A8067gjero6in), and if that intrigues anyone I saw Alan Lankin (of Jazzmatazz (http://home.att.net/~lankina/jazz/), a great resource for jazz fans) has a copy for sale at his web site.

emusic has the concord sessions as well as the Xanadu sets (Fuerst Set, Second Set). All are worth picking up.

Cool! I forgot about the Xanadu albums.

I've been downloading "Cookin On All Burners" - I should have it momentarily.

Thanks again!

Mark Elf is a wonderful New York guitarist who plays in the style of the great Tal Farlow. He has 8 or 9 albums on the Jen Bay label. Mark also holds the distinct honor of an unprecedented 7 straight #1 albums on the national jazz, airplay charts. All of his groups are with top players. Mark can and does play everything. Guitar lovers will dig this guy. :)

Mark Elf is a tremendous player. I've mentioned him on various BB's over the years, with very little response... not sure why, especially since his CD distribution is spectacular for an independent label like Jen Bay. Check him out, those of you who really love bebop guitar.

With regard to Tal, here's something else I've posted before, and it bears repeating. The whole site is a great resource for folks who are interested in classic jazz guitar:

Tal Farlow is undoubtedly one of my favorite jazz guitarists. In addition to the two domestic Verve releases, I heartily recommend the Verve Japan releases of "The Tal Farlow Album", "The Artistry of Tal Farlow", "Autumn in New York", and "Tal". Also, remember not to overlook Farlow's work with Norvo and Mingus on Savoy as well as the 30 radio transcriptions of the same trio appearing on the long OOP Vintage Jazz Classics CD, "Vol. 2, the Red Norvo-Charles Mingus-Tal Farlow Trio". Apparently, Mingus was asked to leave the trio because of a prospective television contract. It is too bad that stupid concerns about "racial mixing" ruled the day because this trio was really something quite special.

Tal is a genius. The King of Bebop guitar. There are 2 guitar tutor Dvds out on Tal - 1 a hot Licks video and the other a Guitar Workshop dvd.

Steve Rochinski has written a book about Tal as well.
