Just thought I'd say "Hi" to everyone. I'm glad I found this site, it's so informative.
I love jazz and am very eager to learn more about it. I play drums in a covers band in my spare time but my first love is Jazz.
Hey, guess what? I'm hoping to go to performing arts college in September 2005 to do a full time jazz musicians course. I'll be a mature student of 49 then. How cool/uncool is that???
I eventually hope to perform professionally at least part time and full time would be even better - but to be honest if I had the chance to play drums in a few jazz bands I think I'd do it for free..............well maybe not.
Thanks for "listening"

Actually, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon, and say that I'm new here too. I like this website. I've been lurking here for months, before I signed up today.

I am a drummer also, although I'm only 31. I've played in many bands, covering many styles of music, but I'm always looking to play in a jazz group.

I really enjoy this bulletin board. It gives me a chance to learn and share in all the jazz knowledge that I can take.

Thanks to the All About Jazz staff! Great job.

Two newbies, and both of you are drummer! Great, and welcome aboard.

Hope you get as much enjoyment here at this site as we do, us old ones, ha!

Have you checked out The "All Birthday Thread?" It is a fun site, and on ef the main contributors, "Still LIfe" has an affinity for drums. She will be happpy with your arrival.

Hope you are able to pursue your love of music to it's nth degree, and wish you well.

Hi there!

So here's another newbie! I'm new to this site and quite new to jazz as well... I think it's safe to say i've become an addict in the last 2 months or so. I've got about 800 non-jazz lp's/cd's but they're gathering dust since I discovered Coltrane and Monk!

Hope to learn a lot from this site and its visitors since I don't have any friends who dig jazz the way I do & there's so much more to discover...

Oh yeah, I've played the bass in rockbands but now I've found some musicians with whom I'm going to try to play...jazz!

First question to you all:
What albums by Roland Kirk and / or Jaki Byard are recommendable? (and are available on cd) I've only got "rip, rig & panic / now please don't you cry beautiful Edith" and it has made me very curious about these incredible musicians!!!

Later,
Freek.

We Free Kings (Mercury)

I'm no Jaki Byard expert, but I hear this one is solid...

Thanks xricci, I'll check out the Kirk album! I've heard about your Byard recommendation too, but where I live (The Netherlands) it's only available on very expensive import.... too bad!

I found out some albums can be pretty hard to obtain... I wish every jazzlabel had their own "Rudy van Gelder editions", since they're available everywhere!

Anyway, thanks!

Later,
Freek.

Try looking at CD Universe.com.

With US albums being cheaper than European and the exchange rate as it is you can get stuff very cheap through US sites.

I've used them for a few years now.

The record in question will set you back about $20 (15/16 Euros)after p&p.

I would highly recommend Roland Kirk's The Inflated Tear.

As for Jaki:

Eric Dolphy - Outward Bound
Sam Rivers - Fuchsia Swing Song
Booker Ervin - The Freedom Book
