The albums "rip, rig & panic" and "now please don't you cry beatiful Edith" by Roland Kirk really blew my mind!!

Can anyone recommend some Roland kirk and / or Jaki Byard albums to me? (preferably albums that are re-released on cd, don't want to spend the rest of my life searching second-hand vinyl stores!)

Which other artists should I check out when I like Kirk / Byard?

Thanks!

The other Roland Kirk, Jaki Byard recording is under Byard's name--The Jaki Byard Experience.

Both Kirk and Byard played with Charles Mingus--Kirk is on Oh Yeah and half of Tonight At Noon.

Byard is on Mingus' "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady," Town Hall Concert (from 1964), The Great Concert of Charles Mingus, Mingus at Monterey, and Reincarnation of a LoveBird (1970).

Jaki Byard recorded as part of two of the finest jazz rhythm sections (that is, Mingus, Byard, Richmond--and Byard, Richard Davis, Alan Dawson). The latter rhythm section made a number of very fine recordings in the 1960s with various artists, such as Booker Ervin (for example, the Freedom Book), Phil Woods (Musiquie du Bois), and Eric Kloss (In the Land of the Giants).

Mr. Byard also made a number of fine recordings under his own name.

I think your next purchase should be "The Jaki Byard Experience", which features Byard and Kirk in more genre-hopping fun. I tend to like Byard's albums more than Kirk's, but that's just a personal preference. The Byard live disc that came out recently is a treat-that one has Joe Farrell filling a similar role as Kirk.

Another good choice would be Roy Haynes' Out of The Afternoon on Impulse. Some good Kirk here.

Thanks for the replies!

I've tried to order the "Experience" album by Byard, but in the Netherlands it's only available on very expensive import....and I'm kinda on a budget. I did manage to order the live album, going to pick it up soon at the recordstore.

As for the rythmsections Byard was a member of; I was already planning on checking out the Booker Ervin stuff, and I already own "the black saint and sinner lady" by Mingus (but I'm not yet sure if I like or dislike it...seems like it's a little bit out of my league, for now).

I heard there's a Byard solo album called "blues for smoke" but it appears it's not available on cd? Any information on where to get these sessions?

Thanks again & keep it coming, you are my source of new listening pleasure!!

If I remember correctly, didn't Mingus play a lot of the piano on "Black Saint" himself because Byard couldn't get it right?

' Blues For Smoke' is , or was, available on cd on Candid.
I'll post the index number when I can find the cd.

Mingus played one piano solo, the first of the third track on side 1of the LP. The rest is Byard.

There's also a Jaki Byard solo recording in the Concord Jazz Maybeck Hall series.

That Maybeck Hall concert is great ( as is almost all the Maybeck series ).

I read somewhere that Mingus even interrupted Byard during concert (more than once), just to show Byard how he thought it should be done... While Byard seems to be able to play ANY style of jazz!!

Maybe the problem was not Byard, but Mingus?
(Don't get me wrong, I love Ah Um)

Mingus was a very demanding bandleader. I think Jaki Byard evolved tremendously while playing under Mingus.

This is an old thread, funny that it has been opened again. This was when I just started on this site, and was just discovering jazz!

I've found some great Byard in the meantime, especially the Booker Ervin recordings are superb. And I think I'm more of a Byard than a Kirk fan by now.
