Has anybody picked this up yet. I heard a cut on WBGO and liked what I heard. But I'd like to get a broader view before thinking about buying it.

To tell the truth, I have not been impressed with Steve's projects for Telarc. It FEELS like they're reigning him in a bit. That said, I've heard the record, and it's solid. There's not a lot to inspire, but it's a good record. If you've liked his past three or four, you'll like this.

I have tickets for a Kennedy Center Jazz Club concert, Steve Turre doing a "Tribute to JJ Johnson," apparently in support of the new CD. Will report back to AAJ then. I'm looking forward to it, hoping for good things.

Brad,

I thought that this was a very good album and did recently review it at All About Jazz. it was released about the same time as Slide Hampton's World of Trombones and both are worthy of a listen, particularly for fans of low brass.

Steve Turre cut some nice records for Verve but seems to be firmly aboard the Swing n' Standards ship at Telarc now. Telarc defines stodginess as jazz labels go. I'd even give Concord an edge over Telarc.
