I am trying to find a recording, preferably cd, of 'Summertime' played by solo sax. I heard it once and loved it so much that I really want to buy this cd/record. Anyone who knows of such recording please post artist name and where I can hear/purchase it. I would recognize this immediately, It is true blues, slow and beautiful. To hear what is sounds like click on the second card (the frog) be patient and connect the dots.

Thanks, but no. I can't hear it, so I can't tell if this is it. I went to Borders and tried to find it but no luck. Any ideas?
Thanks

Kenny G. sucks!
Try the Sidney Bechet version of Summertime!

The Sidney Bechet version is quite good, but have to say the best one I've heard is the Oscar Peterson version - I know it's not a saxophone, but it's still fantastic!

Kenny G. Sucks-Amen. Lend your ears to the Great John Coltranes version on the "My Favorite Things" c.d. on Rhino/Atlantic. This is Jazz.

There's always the Janis Joplin version...lol
Actually, the best version of the tune that I ever heard, IMHO, is Getz's version with Gary Burton on vibes. Those two made for a beautiful combo.

try Sonny Rollins/Coleman Hawkins: "Sonny Meets Hawk!" cd. Maybe this is the one you're looking for. Also a good bass solo on the "Summertime"
cut.
Good Luck!

Dont be scared, if its the Kenny G version that you like, then its up to you but it would be nice to explore other artists whose renditions of the said song would give it more meaning and interest.
The last version of "summertime" that I can recall was in classical format and I still like it done that way.

The Ray Brown Trio featuring Gene Harris.
Best instrumental track I've heard.

There's a glorious soprano sax version of 'Summertime' by Jane Ira Bloom on her 1996 disc 'The Nearness...' (it's retitled 'nearly Summertime' for obvious reasons!).
A superb, imaginative sometimes tuneful, sometimes abstract player.
The band on the disc are peerless - Kenny Wheeler, Julian Priester, Fred Hersch, Rufus Red, Bobby Previte.
Strongly recommended.

Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone, Herbie Mann, and Hank Mobley all did versions I love.

Bev-So right. Jane Bloom is so gifted and gets so few props. Her version on that cd is haunting.

Albert Ayler's version on "My Name is Albert Ayler" is one of my favorites.

'Summertime' is actually a great tune to demonstrate the range of jazz to new listeners.
I've occasionally played a sequence that runs:
1. An operatic version e.g. from Simon Rattle's EMI recording.
2. Ella and Louis
3. Miles and Gil Evans
4. Coltrane from My Favourite Things...Summertime doesn't have to be laid back and languorous,
5. Jane Ira Bloom
Bechet should be in there somewhere but I can't think where it wouldn't upset the progression. Perhaps at the end to show that it's not about progression!

Yeah! Ayler!
(The late Hal Russell:
"Question: What do you listen to at home for pleasure, Hal? The decisive reply: 'Pleasure? Old Albert Ayler records, of course!' " - from Steve Lake's liners to Finnish/Swiss Tour)
and Coltrane's version is great, too!
and Janis Joplin.
and Herbie Mann's (in a totally different vein, though, but i always loved that record!)

Many good versions mentioned above.
For a different take on it try Mongo Santamaria's version on Columbia.

A excellent version of Summertime is found on Jeanne Lee/Ran Blake's Newest Sound Around although it is just vocal and piano

Yeah, Ayler's is a great version. But someone should also mention the one from GETZ AU GO-GO, which to me is a model example of tension and release.

My favorite insrtumental version of "Summertime" is on an old Ahmed Abdul-Malik record called "Eastern Moods". It's a trio: Abdul-Malik on bass, with what sounds to me like a clarinet, and a hand drum. The three musicians created a sensual, Arabic-inflected mood around the familiar Gershwin melody.

Love the Miles/Gil Evans and the Ayler versions but the classic Summertime IMO is Bill Evans trio version on the Riverside album 'How My Heart Sings'

I know it's not jazz, but there was a great pop version of "Summertime" put out by the Zombies. They were the same British invasion group that did "She's Not There" and "Time of the Season." They make "Summertime" sound as if they wrote it, and come to think of it, that's a pretty good definition of a great cover.

Give it time my friend, from what I see, we have a few doctors in the house, as well as some folks that could use some advice as to what to put in their rectum.
I'm ready!

I can't believe no-one's mentioned Freddie Hubbard's treatment as heard on 1962's Impulse Lp 'The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard'!
