The American stride pianist Joe Turner spent most or all of the 1930s in Europe, and recorded as both a sideman and a leader for Swing records of Paris. Does anyone know whether the sides Turner made as a leader in the 1930s are currently available on CD?

I checked the AMG, but they're hopelessly muddled between Big Joe and Stridin' Joe. The only thing I'm aware of for sure that is by Stridin' Joe available now is the Solo Art STRIDE BY STRIDE, which is from 1960. I've heard some earlier things on a Phil Schaap broadcast some years ago. It left me wanting to hear more for sure.

Vogue released a nice mid-50s effort by Joe which was paired on CD with a solo Monk date from about the same time. Imaginative juxtaposition.

Yeah...I forgot about that one. I have it and I like it. BTW, the Monk material is the same as on a laserlight cd, but the Vogue sounds way beter.

A good session of Joe Turner is "Smashing Thirds" on MPS. Hopefully it will be one of the CD reissues on MPS that will be forthcoming.

Brownian,

The only 'leader' sessions I find for Joe during the 1930s are the solo sides from Paris, which are excellent.
Do you mean the Harlem Seven sides with Freddy Jenkins?
They are great!

The best (piano) Joe Turner I ever heard was a live lp on the "77" label. Maybe George Buck has reissued it. Next would be a Black and Blue trio date with Jo Jones.
