Classic hard rock and metal tunes from the 70’s and 80’s, rearranged with rich harmonies and pulsating grooves…the
worlds of metal and jazz come together in fiery improvisations on
hollowbody guitar, double-bass and drums…..this is the Alex Skolnick trio !!

If you're a fan of jazz guitar and remember (and appreciate) the likes of Aerosmith's "Dream On", Ozzy's "Goodbye to Romance", and/or The Who's "Pinball Wizard"......do yourself a favor and check these guys out!!! ( www.alexskolnick.com )

Yes this is THE Alex Skolnick! And the trio will be playing in Baltimore 4/1 at the Cat's Eye....if youcan make it, get there - you will be amazed!

Anyone else here a fan? :)

Take care!
Mare

I haven't heard the disc yet, though I read about it in Guitar World. Skolnick was one of the guitarists for Testament, a major speed metal band back in the day.

You got it, Muskrat! How many musicians get reviewed in Guitar World, et al AND in Down Beat ???? :) Check out the Feb 2003 issue if you haven't seen it yet -- a deservedly great review! Goodbye to Romance: Standards for a New Generation is magnificent! :)

Take care,
Mare

I remember Alex from my heavy metal days (way back when...). The man always had incredible chops. Who could have thought he would venture into jazz!
The MP3 samples sound imprpessive - I'll check the CD out.

I'm not too surprised. At its highest level, heavy metal is by far one of the most musically sophisticated and technically demanding forms of rock music. You simply can't play it unless you have some really serious chops. I can see how a metal musician would dig the technical demands that jazz places on its players. And both types of music have a very heavy emphasis on rhythm.

Goodbye To Romance could be the jazz guitar CD of the year. I've never been a metal fan but this CD is superb, and forward-looking in its integration of feedback elements into pure acoustic jazz. Who ever thought you could make Detroit Rock City swing so hard? One quibble: sometimes Skolnick ends his solos while they're still building in intensity. Next time, I hope Alex stretches out more.

Clifton, I'm not sure where Clifton Hts, PA is....but if it's within a couple hours of Baltimore, I highly recommend that you cruise down for the show on the 1st...I assure you, when they're live those solos build all the way to that crescendo...it's downright amazing. It might sound (look) funny to hear (read) but War Pigs live is nothing short of magnificent!

See ya!
