Should we include "Vocalists" as a forum category?

I don't see where vocalists are any different from artists. Granted, some reject vocal jazz and some love it, but I think singing artists and instrument artists should have the same home: Artists.

Well guys, if you do not want a category dedicated to vocalists that is fine. I do think that you miss the point, though, when you jokingly suggest dedicating forums to every instrument under the sun. There were a lot of interesting discussions about jazz influenced vocalists (e.g., Bennett, Gilberto, Martin, Starr, Sinatra, etc.) that I do not think would have occurred on the BNBB in the absence of such a forum. Of course, this obviously is not the BNBB. However, there are a lot of young jazz listeners who are interested primarily in vocal talent, and these people might not join this board otherwise. Indeed, it was Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan who not only introduced me to jazz, but also inspired me to explore the jazz instrumentalists.

I don't really object to it and I do understand Edward's position, but I'd rather not see it segregated from Artists (or Recommendations, etc.) and I do believe it's better to keep the number of forums down to as few as possible. Partly because it makes it a bit easier to navigate the board, but also because it will allow us to add forums later, if and when necessary, as the AAJ board grows and develops its own identity. If we end up talking a lot about vocalists then we can add it later. If trombonists dominate, then we can add that one too. ;) Let's just see how things go for a while before adding too many more fora...

I voted no. Like a few others, I feel that vocalists can just be included in the Artists forum. They are artists, aren't they? The Artists forum would probably get a lot more attention anyway. The Vocalists forum on the BNBB often seemed to go for days at a time without a post.

I would suggest that a discussion on songs forum should be added to the vocalist forum. It would be of great interest to talk about great tunes like Stella by Starlight, Footprints, Take Five, Waltz For Debby. To Young To Go Steady, Summertime, Ruby My Dear, I Can't Get Started, Laura ect and Jazz singers and jazz artists that perform them.

Though not as fully utilized in the BNBB as say New Releases or some other Forums (Fora?) there were often interesting and lively disscussions. If you wish to make it Vocalists and Songs as suggested above I will vote aye to that as well.:)

I voted YES. There has been a vocalist forum everywhere I've ever been. With the growing number of vocalists, why wouldn't you add a vocalists forum?:confused:

That is true.and logical. But then I thought some sensible divisions are necessary to keep order. If the board was based on one forum "Music",we'd have an unmanagable string of threads to follow So I again vote for a Vocalists Forum as opposed to including it in Artists. It then becomes more logical to include Songs with Vocalists as of course Songs wouldn't fit with Artists

But we are talking a Vocalist Forum not a thread. As said above we had some very interesting "Vocalist" threads on the BNBB. I think it was due to the encouragement of an existing Vocalist Forum. I haven't seen much in the way of vocalist commentary on this board.
Again, I think a forum so devoted would be welcome and take up very little space that should be devoted to other purposes.

But seriously, I think the fact that posts to the vocalist forum at the old BNBB is precisely why it should be seperated from "artists". Vocalists are a whole 'nother thing in jazz, and it was nice to have their threads easy to find when the need arose

I vote yes for the simple reason that it makes finding a thread you may be interested in that much easier. Also, I agree with xricci's view that it would stimulate more conversation on vocalists if there were such a thread.

The vocalist is sometimes all a listener recognizes about a song. Expanding on the recording and talking about who was playing the date is easy to do and very informative.
So, lets give the warblers their own space.

i voted yes because there are some really great vocalists especially in the jazz (classic) category.....ELLA....SASSY.....CARMEN.....BILLIE.. ...MEL.....JOE......
