I recently got the Chico Hamilton Mosaic set, enjoy it immensely, so I decided to check out his new release "Thoughts Of" on Koch-it's a stone groove! His group Euphoria, who I hadn't heard, is the real deal. Guitar is a big part of their sound like Chico has been known for over the years and Cary DeNigris is really solid on this disc (especially on Angel Eyes) with a sometimes very dirty tone! Cool tributes to Miles, Prez and Trane on this one too-anyone else heard this yet? It's great that a legendary cat like Chico is performing at this level at age 80!

"...a stone groove..."

haha, that's what homer simpson said when his veterinarian told him he would die if he kept getting cannonballs shot into his gut: "dying would be a stone groove."

desertblues: check out the Blue Note CD release of the "Original Ellington Suite" which was only recently discovered (after the Mosaic was finished - read the whole story about the discovery in the CD-liners).
It's the complete suite with Eric Dolphy and for my likings an essential addition to the Mosaic!

"the original ellington suite" is an absolutely fantastic cd. are you sure blue note released that? my copy is on a different label (not sure which label, but i know it isn't blue note.) maybe blue note did release it...with bonus tracks, in which case i'll have to do some shopping.

It was originally recorded for Pacific Jazz, but since their catalog was acquired by the modern Blue Note, it's out on Blue Note (but the cover says 'Pacific Jazz'---is this confusing enough?). Anyway, I agree with all the good stuff everybody's said about this: A Great album whether you're heavily into Chico Hamilton or not, iteresting early Dolphy, and an amazing story (see liner notes). This session came about as close to being lost forever as possible and was suddenly, fortuitously plucked form limbo.

i guess they tried to make sure it didn't have the look of a typical blue note release.

That is a reproduction of the cover of the original Pacific Jazz Ellington album, although the music inside is different to what was on the LP, as pointed out above.

I've checked out the new Chico disc and don't think it's worth my 13 bucks.

The Mosaic set is a beauty.

I would also recommend "Man From Two Worlds" with Charles Lloyd and "Reunion" with Buddy, Fred and Johnny Pisano.

Chack our Chico withe th eoriginal Gerry Mulligan quartet.

I saw the original Chico group a bunch of times at the Strollers in the 50's. One of my great jazz experiences.

I actually think Chico Hamilton has gotten better with age. I was fortunate to get to see him at the Knitting Factory a couple of years ago, with Cary DeNegris and Eric Person, and he is still going strong. Most of his recordings over the last ten years or so are first rate.

That band with Cary deNegris and Eric Person was just wonderful live. I caught them about 9 years ago and the music reminded me very much of the stuff Chico was putting out in the mid-60s such as 'El Chico' and 'The Dealer' - but with a slightly more reflective and pastoral edge to it. I don't think I've heard a more subtle or musical drummer in my life - fantastic player with the mallets, lots of shading and nuance. A most civilised performance, astonishing for a drummer who was already into his 70s. Chico rules !:)

He was great, I thought. The thing that mystified me was the concert was in the Knitting Factory's smallest venue and was lightly attended. Unbelievable!
